My cousin is popping over from Canada with her young son in a weeks time. Her son and mine are similar ages (15 months). I'd like to understand what is their 'relationship' to each other. Is her son my 2nd cousin or a cousin once removed? Is my son his 2nd cousin once or twice removed? Or something else?

Not important on any level but I'm keen to know/understand how the relations tree works. Anyone?

If it's relevant, my cousin is the daughter of my fathers brother. Oh,I better stop before it gets even more confusing.

I think that their son is a first cousin once removed and the relationship with your son would be second cousin (I think the removed refers to generations apart). I may be completely wrong however, probably not a very usefull response thinking about it.

I think you're right.

Your cousin's Son is your first cousin once removed.
Your cousin's Son is your son's 2nd cousin.

yes

The once removed, twice removed stuff only happens when it skips a generation.

Thanks Guys, that looks about right and makes my previous job of 'random' Googling a little more focused.

James TW - great chart, thank you but can't get my head round the Grandparent connection (to the kids) in my case.

Regardless, thanks all -PH to the rescue as usual.

No worries - It was in fact a shameless steal from Wikipedia smile

Try this though - it seems a bit better:

And the family tree will have loops in it anyway.

That figures. Look at your post count. Typing must be a doddle with all those extra fingers.
