My new, paid by DD, TV Licence turned up the other day.

It occurred to me that I'd not switched the thing on even once in 2009 so I phoned up to cancel the licence...

Very helpful; said if I'd not been using it I might be due a refund on the old licence too, told me to cancel my DD and return the form he'd send me...

Received and returned the form today. smile

Wow, I am most impressed. I don't think I could cope without a TV (which I know is a very poor reflection on me).

I watched all my "TV" either downloaded form the tinternet (NOT the bbciplayer type things) or just watched DVDs on my PC. Wrote to them and they were OK with it.

Ah the old

"We're not saying you are using your telly illegally, just reminding you and everyone else without a license that we know you've got a telly and we're going to rape you"

Or words to that effect

I was thinking along similar lines yesterday, thinkng that I'd not watched anything on the BBC channels for ages (but The Apprentice is just about to start......).

Soooo if you could get a TV that you could prove couldn't receive the BBC channels would you still have to pay the licence?

As you're a computer owner with access to BBC I-player, won't they be able to get you on that? Even though you may have no interest in watching via your computer?

Me too! (well mine broke)

I don't miss it at all - in fact when I go to friends house/pub and the T.V. is on and everyone is just sat there staring blankly at the screen it really makes me wonder what people are turning into.

Anything I really want to see is available on the Internet, any DVDs etc can be played on the PC too.

I recently rediscovered what a joy it is to sit and read a book instead, and generally the radio is chirping away in the background.

Happy days!

The Irish TV licencing twits are not so easy to deal with.

I moved into a furnished apartment, and there are two TVs here. Not mine, and never used. Unplugged from power and antennae.

They are pursuing me for a licence fee. I need to have them removed from the premises.

Pain in the arse!

You only need a licence to watch programmes live. Im a student in uni halls at the moment, can't get a signal at all, but quickly found i dont need it, each terrestrial channel has their own webplayer with 90% of the programmes available, which is all i need really.

This is going to sound like the stupidest question in the world ever. But hey.

If you have a telly but use it just for xbox (ps3 etc), then thats ok, right? What about a telly that can't recieve bbc1 and 2?
