Have always had a thing for all things RC, from boats to helicopters and the fantastic Tamiya models that I spent hours building and painting before hurtling them around a field and generally getting them tatty! And now being able to pick up some of the vintage stuff that as a kid I could never afford.

But a good few months back I picked up from Japan the Tamiya CR-01 rock crawler chassis with Toyota body shell and now I’m hooked on rock crawling. Started to hop up the CR-01 with a 55t motor, rooster ESC, hi torque steering servo, play around with the spring rates and the things that you can climb up/crawler over has just had me amazed and giggling like a school girl! But the chassis has it’s limits so now I’ve gone and picked up a specialised rock crawler chassis to house all the hop up parts, should be delivered from the US next week.

The chassis is a Copperhead and given where the CR-01 could get, I can’t wait to see where I can get this one! biggrin

Anyone else gotten the Rock Crawler bug???

that thing looks the business!

Ive dipped my toes into crawling, and really enjoyed it, using a tamiya juggernaut with custon chassis, reduction gearbox and locked diffs, found it great fun, but I then decided to take out the reduction box and fit two motors with two packs of batteries, just to see how fast it could go. Since then its been sat on a shelf as Im too lazy to put it back to crawler spec, but I will do one day!

Just ordered a new toy today that I may try to do some crawling with - traxxas E-revo plus two speed gearbox (which includes a super low ratio option) and a pair of spools biggrin shame nothings in stock, so im waiting eagerly....

I have a Tracer Junfac, with Tamiya TLT drivetrain, gummy 1.9s, and a Kamtec Landrover lid, which is a bit too heavy. It's been sitting under my worktable for most of the year, I really should get it out for a run...

Just got myself a Tamiya Pajero. Not quite the mad articulation of the crawlers, but more of a scale runner. Quite capable though, by all accounts.

Aye, nice rig. I think if you lock the diffs and get some decent tyres, you could be onto to a winner.

http://ukrcrc.com/forum/ is a pretty good source of info!

Hi Nick, glad you like the Landie! The shell is from kamtec.co.uk, he's on ebay as well. The chassis is Junfac Tracer, and the drivetrain and suspension are all from a Tamiya TLT. The various wheels are from different Tamiya models, and the knobbly tyres are from a Spanish guy who sells them on scale4x4.org
As you can see from the flickr pics, I lengthened the body to fit the chassis, if I was building another I'd probably start with the body and make the chassis to fit.
There are a lot of other ways to build a scale crawler, the CR01 D_Drink mentioned in the first post is a pretty good starting point, it's available with a few shells, including a Unimog, and there are plenty of places doing custom bodies.

...and he's absolutely rubbish. CBA to post it all up, but suffice to say, I shall not be buying from him again!

Sorry to hear that chief, I've bought a few bits from him in the past, never had any trouble with him, though I have heard that some of the stuff offered on ebay is made to order, so can sometimes take a while.

That looks like a great starter package. I would be more into the scale side rather than the competition rigs, but axial gear is always good quality stuff.
