I think it got banned ,in this country at least ,it was deemed too violent and gory for children frown I would love to have a look at a copy now smile

It was in print around 1975-6 ,remember the Summer Special of 76,it was probably the last one I ever saw.

Not sure ,the only characters in it I remember were Hook Jaw (a shark, around about the time " Jaws" came out) Dredger (a kind of Bond type with attitude)and a story line about a German tank major in WW2,can`t remember the name tho.

This is it

It was actually the "2000AD" thread that got me thinking about it,seems there may be a connection.

Action Comic ran for years - issue 1 was in 1938, and was the first comic with Superman in it - worth some serious cash now (250k+). You should be able to pick up a non-sought after issue on ebay for a tenner or less though.

I used to get Battle/Action comic in the 70's. Always used to hope the paper boy brought it before I had to leave for school in the morning every thursday.

Great site about it here....

Comics were beginning to decline in the 1970s. IPC (part of The Mirror Group) tried to counter the decline by introducing a comic which was more Hollywood inspired than previous more "British" comics. One of the main stories in "Action" was "Hookjaw" - a blatant rip-off of the then new "Jaws" movie. There was also a tough renegade cop story which bore a very close resemblence to "Dirty Harry" anfd Clint Eastwood.

A non- movie related story was "Flesh", about time-travelling hunters who travelled back in time to hunt T-Rex and his mates.

The stories were quite good - but the blood qoutient was the highest ever seen in a "kid's" comic.
I think even Mary Whitehouse got in on the act to have it banned.

A new war comic called "Battle" began around the same time. Eventually, as IPC had done on many occasions in the past, the two titles were merged and the revised comic became "Battle-Action".
