gearbox dose not pick up 1st gear when coming to a stop.if you come to a stop and pull away quick like at a juntion it revs and bangs into gear.if you just wait 2 or 3 seconds its ok. also it bangs into drive from cold but not reverse. cars a 1999 with 48,000 had it 4 years and always had this fault.

I thought that was normal not to go down to 1st unless you make it

I have an S-Type 4.2 V8 SE which I think has the same box. I also think that it does not engage 1st gear unless in sport mode. Maybe this does not apply to the XK8 anyway.

Delayed engagement on the A clutch.

You need a new valve body.

i should have said dose not engage any gear but when you come to a complete stop it should pick up 1st gear.i was thinking along the lines of the valve body you have just confirmed it.going to have someone look at it at long last.ill let you know how i get on. thanks

If it is of any use BMW dealers sell the solenoids on their own which means if it's a solenoid problem the issue can be fixed for a fraction of the cost of fitting a new valve body.

My 97XK has just started to exhibit the same problem.
When slowing down for a junction there will be a slight bump just before the car coasts to a stop while you wait for the traffic - the 'Gearbox Fault' warning message will be displayed and the car seems to go into limp home mode. If I switch off the engine and restart while sitting in the traffic the fault will have cleared and the car will be fine again to pull away.
I am taking it in to get the throttle body recall done in April so I hope Jag can shed some light on what the exact fault is which is driving the generic 'gearbox fault' annunciation.
