First off, Mods: Please feel free to move/edit/delete as appropriate if anything I've said is out of line.

Many people on here and further afield know about tunnel running. Something which started (I'm guessing!) with a group of friends has spawned into the de rigeur of urban automotive pastimes. The videos on YouTube, the appearances on T.V. and the hundreds of photos all over the internet are a testament to this.

I love a good tunnel run, I have a nice V8 and live in south west London so am ideally placed to sample the delights of our capital. However, I prefer to tunnel run alone or with one, sometimes two, friends. As much as I would love to convoy with Astons, Lambos and the like I just feel safer and more discreet. I think a reason for this is because of the hundreds of forums and car clubs who now prowl the streets of London on a Saturday night without a thought or care of 99% of other road users. It’s no wonder the PH tunnel running scene has gone underground as the standard of driving is horrendous.

This brings me onto the point of this thread. A couple of Saturdays ago I was enjoying the sights and sounds of the city in the small hours, driving slowly as I normally do (otherwise you can't see the pretty girls walking around!) when I noticed a fair number of modded cars, mostly Jap but a few Puntos, Micras etc were driving around. I was lapping Kingsway (good tunnel!) and was waiting to turn onto Aldwich when I noticed a police car with its blues and twos. Reason? A Nissan 200SX, all modded up with wings n' things had tried drifting around Aldwich (so I read from other forums) and I saw the end result - it stuffed backwards into a parked 309. Both, from my passing glance, looked to be a complete write off. How sad for the owner of the 309.

I called it a night at that point and went home. I think the main reason for posing is to say, congratulations PH, you do it right. And to all those who maybe get annoyed they aren't allowed on tunnel runs organised by the original people, try and see it from their point of view. I certainly do.

Happy Tunnel Running!

So it isn't a danger of DRIVING in a tunnel, but rather the danger of DRIFTING in a tunnel!

Or more the danger of letting the sort of people who drift in tunnels know your going for a bit of aural pleasure.

If they dont know your doing it, they won't join you.

I think the point I was trying to make, in a rather convoluted way, was that if you organise tunnel runs on a public forum you cannot account for the people who turn up or thier behaviour. When things like this happen, it just puts the whole 'tunnel running' thing in a bad light as far as the general public are concerned which is a shame because as normal it is the actions of the few who effect the majority.

Hey,
I was there as well that Saturday, I took the Focus for a little drive along the embankment through a couple of tunnels where I ended up in-between a lot of Skylines, I must say the sounded nice and other giving it a bit of beans through the tunnel were acting responsibly enough.

So I think your right in saying the a minority ruin it for the majority.

Do you have a link to the said forum?

I like the bit where you have mentioned Lambos and astons, but in your moaning youve mentioned jap cars!! When I have been on runs with lambos and astons or fezzas, we dont drift into other cars or drive like cocks.!! I am confused at your post?

I was working that night, 8th floor above Kingsway.
It's suprising how you can hear a loud exhaust that high up but it was really noticable that night.
I remember seeing an evo, skyline and a 200sx doing laps aound Aldwych, I can see the point of a few runs through the same tunnel but this seemed to go on for a good couple of hours, would've thought they'd get bored going round in circles all night, if it was me I'd be taking advantage of the light traffic and visiting as many tunnels as possible.
Staying in the same place can only generate bad press or unwanted attantion from the old bill.

I have been on a couple of 'Thunder in the Tunnel runs' they have been very well organised, without incident and can involve up to 80 TVRs.

And without being biast *cough* you cannot beat the sound of TVRs in tunnels smile

Olly.

This isn't new. There used to be a good few PH runs out "Pie and Drive", "Pie On The Beach" and meets like Virginia Waters. They grew too big as the site became large and successful...and this was several years back, now.

Then there's the problems of the standard of driving. Often very good and courteous - and occasionally a tad overenthusiastic especially when trying too hard to keep up.

I used to assist in organising runs out but don't any more. My decision was not based on the lovely people I met but more on the logistics of ever greater numbers.

JDWCD - sorry for the confusion. The car I saw crash happened to be Jap, on what was obviously a Jap tunnel run. Astons and Lambo's are just beautiful cars and if I was going to go tunnel running with a group of people I know which type of cars I'd rather have around me! (Hint: they're NOT from the East!)

I'm not surprised Dom you don't organise meets anymore. The scale of some of them (like the ones you mentioned) is enormous and I would imagine would be a logistical nightmare! I take my hat off to the chaps who do though, as they are always great fun.

Thurbs - no I don't I'm afraid. I Googled some forums on the Sunday morning after the even to see if I could find out what happened. I didn't save the links and can't find them now.

And I agree that V8's, specifically TVR's sound amazing in Tunnels! AJP8, mmmm.....

that was probably the jap tunnel run (run for charity!). it is a shame, but at least us PH TRs are distanced from all this and maintain a good relationship with the BiBs
