Am currently giving the S3 a bit of overdue TLC, mostly on the chassis. Scraping dead powder coat/waxoyl and associated crud off the bits I can get to to kurust/hammerite and re-waxoyl and am having 'fun' scraping off the 'outriggers' that run down the sides of the car. Can anyone let me know what their favourite widget/scrinson or doodah is for getting this done, so far a screw driver, teaspoon and the skin of my knuckles is getting the job done but SOOOOOOO slowley!....

All hints greatfully recieved

Bought a paint scrapping widget, that has a flat edge, a hooky bit and the best bit a semi-circular bit exactly fitting the outrigger size all on one handle, can't remember the make but I could pop out to the gaarge if necessary.
It's still hard work though

I've used paint scrapers and such like but as you say bl**dy hard work. I find a dremel makes things a lot easier although the size of the attachments is restricted. I've also used a flexible shaft (Podie ) on a drill with various wire brush and grinding attachments. When I had the front end stripped right down I used an angle grinder () and took it all back to bare metal very carefully but very quickly Anything to make life easier

cheers Harry and Keithy!

Angle grinder and dremmel certainly where I can't cause too much colateral damage...Harry, as you're local any chance you could let me know where you got your 'multi scraper' from and I'll give it a go

Cheers

I adapted a old large kitchen knife into the Widget as described by grinding a concave shape with a rad about the same as the chassis tubes and ground a sharp edge on it and wearing the necessary PPE gear spent a lot of time scaping the flakey old plastic coating off - worked well but still took awhile- happy scraping

I second that, good tools for scraping crud off. I think most DIY shops sell them.

Mike got it from The Range at Fort Brockhurst. Hasn't got any identifying marks on it, except its a blue and black handle, I think it was made by Crown/Harris or somesuch. I'm sure other DIY shops will sell them.

I think you are describing the tool that painters and decorators use to remove the paint from window frames. Can be found in pretty much every shop that sells decorating stuff. B&Q, etc...

When i done my S i used a few small screwdrivers etc etc but found the best thing was my battery drill with an assortment of wire brush attachments.

It took all the loose stuff off and teh rust and also scratched the good stuff ready for a new coat of Hammerite on top.
Than a good old waxoyl.
