Have just bought a mk 1
one of the things I have noticed are that the tin m cyls are rusty
I want to retain these but am at a loss what to do about the rusting
painting will obviously not last as the slightest spillage of brake fluid will strip that
Any ideas maybe galvanizing
thanks Andy

andy

once they are rusting you are best to replace them, new metal ones are only 60 odd quid a piece

you can blast them and get them re-dipped and sealed if they arnt to bad, but in my experience by the time you have noticed the problem they are past economic repair! i wouldnt even spend to much time on the really rare ones if they are bad, id say that 99% of people will accept the safety issues of old masters and fit new ones

they will start to weep fluid once they get to bad

in the past ive bought new ones, stripped them and had them re dipped to the correct colour, then reasembled them - it depends how anal you are i guess!!

Maybe it's worth giving them a light hone and fitting new seals whilst they are out of the car

yes i alredy have the seals to do that
i am more concerned about the exterior which has some rust
paint is no good as the slightest spillage from brake fluid will strip it
a fluid resistant coat of the same colour would be ideal
but what to use
thanks andy
