One for Roger/Monkfish .. after service query
Discussion
Roger and fellow club members, I recently had the Monaro down to Roger's house of fish for a service, gear box oil change and friction modifier. Now after driving the car back from Milton Keynes to the centre of the universe (Newcastle), some 250miles+ I noticed a faint smell of oil, hot, burning oil. I assumed it was either over fill burning off or maybe some spilled oil on the diff, gearbox or block burning off.
However that was on Tuesday, and it's still a bit wiffy today. Last time I had the car serviced by the Vaux guys at dealership X they failed to tighten the oil filter up and the contents of the car spilled down the A1 from my house to Darlington, where Sherewoods identified the issue and using one hand resolved it.
I'm not suggesting that Roger or his handy mechanics have done this but I wonder what is causing the smell, I've been under the car and can't see any oil run (drips being pushed by the travelling air) on the underside of the car, however where in fecks name is the filter, is it behind the metal under engine plate? My beedy little eyes never picked it up.
Also even after the gear box oil change the 'notchy' box is still there. It only happens on 1st and 2nd, normally whern I've come to a stand still, I go to engage 1st gear to pull away and it's almost like an invisble barrier is stopping the gear from dropping it, the gear stick won't move forward. I dip the clutch and try again ... ping, hey presto, it's in. The same goes for 2nd when changing from 1st, it's either a no go or a very very hard drag into 2nd.
Now me being me and trying to analyse the issue, I think maybe it could be clutch related, because if it was the box it would ALWAYS do it and not as it is currently about 20-30% of the time.
Any ideas anyone? I would try and get the clutch replaced by Vaux (hope in hells chance) or simply fork out for a LS7 unit.
I've read somewhere about gear box issues but never this....
Car is a 56 plate 6.0 VXR with 23,000'ish miles.

I have an 05 5.7 Ro and my gearbox is notchy on 1st and 2nd, even after the oil was changed in it. I just put it down to part of the cars character, even though it is annoying!
My car also has a constant oily smell, more noticable after i got it waxoyled a few months back. I can literally smell it when i'm walking up my road! Again, part of it's character.

Dont ask for a waxoyl treatment then, you will smell waxy for months.
As for the box see the other thread re Vauxhall in the title. IMO its part of the T56's nature to be troublesome to shift. I would suggest the synchro's are a little fiddly. I know its an area they changed on the new "Magnum" TR6060 revision as well as an extra .25" width on the gears etc. I think they are carbon fibre now instead of something more rubbishy. I find if you wind it out in first going into second is much easier. Reverse for me requires much clutch action as does first on quite a few occasions. Still as long as it handles the power I dont mind it its a little tempramental. Better that than to be made of glass.

I thought as much, I knew the box had a trait of being a finkey bugger, but it;s just annoying as hell in stop start traffic and trying to pull away at lights and not being able to get into 1st.
I wonder if bleeding the clutch a little will help, I know from reading posts that the fluid can degrade over time. Every little helps, then once I know deep down inside that it's the box and not some external factor I shall "let it lie".
My car has also been waxoyl'd, however the smell went away after 4-5 weeks, yet this is new, I've just driven from Newcastle to Leeds to spend the weekend with my good lady and upon arrival I got a wiff of warm oil, I got in through the window when driving through Leeds centre at 10mph.
Hmm, I will have another look on the ramps when I return to Newcastle on Sunday or Monday.
Where is the oil filter located, I will check for leaks around there.
Thanks for the comments gents.

Im sufferirng the same issue with 1st and now second and reverse. car gos into VX monday for a warenty clutch replacement to follow the saga im having look at the following thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... and wish me luckHowever that was on Tuesday, and it's still a bit wiffy today. Although the dealership I go into up North (Darlington areaa) are brilliant, as is there resident Ro and R8 mechanic the warranty people have been less than helpful, they are obviously based nationwide.
To local dealership - Thanks for all the hard work over the last few months.
To the warranty 'guy' - you sir can gargle my balls.
I think I'll just shell out for an LS7 clutch and get Roger to fit it at the same time as the cam, suspension and brakes. That is if your issues are resolved by a new clutchh.
I have found the dealerships willing but the man above to be very negative.
Apparently the paint that is flaking off my door handles cannot be covered under warranty as the car has had some chips on the bonnet filled in, therefore it's been painted!

ill keep you posted if i do get a new clutch or not and if the issue resolves its self. as to the paint on the door handles that has to be the worst excuse i have ever heard for not doing it.To local dealership - Thanks for all the hard work over the last few months.

Been there, done that, the first LS7 clutch fitted to a Holden IIRC. No change.
Cheers, saved me some monies ......

Exactly. It's caused by the gears not aligning correctly when you dip the clutch and the input shaft of the gearbox stops. You try to push it into gear and it won't go because the teeth on the geartrains are not lining up. You lift the clutch, the input shaft is driven again and you dip it again and get a bit luckier the next time! This is also why you find it easier to engage 1st/reverse with a little vehicle motion, the output shaft being moved helps slot the cogs together. The synchros between gears need a bit of RPM to work, hence why the changes tend to be easier and smoother at higher RPMs.

Well this might sound funny but now that I know/have been told that it's a trait of the gear box and (as above) why it does it ... I'm happy to live and let live. I have no problem putting up with a character of the car, much like I put up with the rediculous drive train shunt on my Honda S2000, once I knew it was a side effect of having a light flywheel and heavy drive train I lived with it.
I don't have a problem dipping the clutch and sometimes pulling away in 2nd, I drive like a right lemon most of the time so I'm cool.
Just glad that others have this issue, sounds harsh I know, but you know what I mean.
Thanks all, much appreciated.
1st, grrr, 1st, grrrr elbow pops, 1st, grrr break into sweat, dip clutch, 1st grrr burst blood vessel, car behind beeps, balls pull away in 4th ..... it has the grunt!

If it makes you feel any better, my old 1993 Sierra LXi twin cam with MT75 box was exactly the same. Getting into 1st at standstill at a set of lights could be frustrating. You can also try shifting into another gear like 3rd and then into 1st, sometimes that will help get everything aligned for engagement (keep your foot on the clutch).
Yeah I dont force mine. Tricks are to declutch again, also to try 2nd or any forward gear, then partialy release the clutch till it just starts to grab, then declutch and quickly snatch first, that normally works 95% of the time. As mentioned worse case drive off in 2nd.
Finding 2nd gear is easy if you wind her out in first, which has the side benefit of some drift action and traction loss to make you feel better about it
