Clutch master cylinder removal

I've spent a very frustrating day trying to change the clutch master cylinder on an S1 Elise.

Does anyone have a tip for removing the N/S nut securing the master cylinder to the pedal box ?

I have spent the half of the day with my head in the foot well, the other half buying a selection of sockets and extension bars from Halfords – but I still can’t get any purchase on the thing ! Is there a knack ?
