Anyone know how much play on the gearbox output shaft is acceptable ?

I've been checking me UJ's this afternoon (all OK) found that the N/S shaft is bashing the drainpipe and the O/S wheel bearing has a headache both issues where recorded on a pre-MOT so they where no surprises.

I hope that the wheel bearing is the cause of the three figure vibration and the drives haft hitting the pipe is the cause of most of the clattering but then....

When checking the Prop shaft U/J's I've found that there is some play in the box output shaft and there's oil splattered all over the tunnel in the vicinity - it's not dripping as the silencers catching most of it.

Is there an oil seal & bearing in there that can be replaced ?

Anyone on here a gearbox expert scratchchin

You can change the oil seal with the 'box in situ... are you sure that's where the oil is coming from? It's often leaking from where the selector linkage enters the rear wall of the gearbox. There's an O-ring in there but the only way to change involves a full stripdown. Of the 'box, not you wink
As to how much play in the output shaft is OK, I'd say 'not much'.

Cheers Ian,

Thats a possibility as the output flange is fairly clean, couldn't see any further up into the tunnel but there is a possibility that the leak is further up. Not sure about the play... will have to replace the wheel bearing and tweak the exhaust routing to see if that solves the clattering

Ah well at least the chassis won't rot....

As an afterthought - Is the output flange bolted on to a shaft the same way the input flange is bolted to a diff ?

I wonder if the bolt / nut holding the flange onto the box has come loose ?

Yep. I think it's a big Nyloc, don't recall it being split-pinned... though it might be.
