Help guys, I can't seem to find a simple, straightforward answer to a basic question:

I've got Elements 6, and I want to print on to A4, because that's as big as my printer does. I know (or think) that the optimum ppi for printing is 240 or 300 according to several mags.

The default setting in Elements is 72ppi, so I just go to "image --->resize --->image size" and change the ppi to 300 right ?

But then the image is still too big for A4. It's now 32.92 x 21.95cm.

Will just forcing the image to fit on the media (in printer preferences) be OK or does this alter/ deteriorate the image ?

There must be an easier way. Need help guys !

either 'fit to size' as you suggest or use the crop tool to set to A4 size but remembering to set the ppi to 300 in the process.

The ppi setting could be 1 or 5million, your printer does not care, just use "fit to page" in the print dialogue box.

The 300 figure is a minimum figure for typical commercial print (though you can get away with less). Basically put the page dimensions (297x210mm) into the crop tool, and crop to what ever you want. Don't input anything in the dpi box as there's no point loosing data if you don't need too. Your printer will likely be printing at 600ppi or above anyhows.

In theory you may get some moire patterns if you're image is of similar resolution to the print resolution, but in practice you can ignore this.

The dpi depends on your printers native resolution (epson is multiples of 180) so in the box you can put in 180 for the dpi then set the size to 21cm which as you have already found out is over 30cm so you will have to crop it to make it fit A4.
