Don't know for sure - what about the pipes feeding the water heater? Nt sure where they leave the engine bay on a pre-serp.

There are 2 metal pipes that run under the arch of the inlet manifold, the heater hoses just connect to them (push on with hose clips to secure). Unusual to spring a leak round there TBH. If they are the source the inlet valley gasket will be very wet (overflowing down the bellhousing)

You should have nice easy access to them with the plenum top & trumpet base removed. Stick some kitchen roll down there first to see if the valley gasket is wet though?

If the core plugs at the rear of the box had gone, the water would be inside the bell-housing? It must come from the top & run down the back of the engine I reckon. Just make sure its not petrol from the infamous fuel lines wink

If the cars been garaged out of freezing weather its got to be perished hose pipes.. Core plugs are only pushed out by the water turning to ice then pushing the plugs out,,check pipes for heater matixs... The worst case i could be rusted core plug down to running engine with out enough antifreeze........Good luck & hope its pipes GOLDIE

I don't know if it is the same but on the V8S (pre serp) those 2 hoses coming of the back of the manifold have a small bore bleed hose linking them together before they go through the bulkhead to the heater.
When I dismantled my car that small bore piece of hose was completely rotten, far worse than anything else on the car.
It was located right at the back of the engine stuffed down the back near the valley.

Pic below, manifold connection on left, heater on right (I think maybe it heads off in a different direction on the griff?)

edited to add:
Those 2 rubber hoses at the front (pic earlier in thread) can be done without removing anything.
One of my metal pipes under the manifold is looking a bit tired - the end near the bulkhead has a some rot where it was inside the rubber hose, but you can't really inspect these without having the manifold off.

Thats the infamous bypass Chris, Without it the heater reg valve is not strong enough to shut hehe and when heater is closed theoretically all the head flow goes through it before the stat opens. I think quoted experiences of drilling bigger bypasses in the stats are very related to that 'little' devil.

On the Chims it is in the footwell, and the Griffs IIRC. Serps have been reported not to have them (and I've seen a few where I couldn't find them?) which would bother me TBH.

Replacing those two hoses in the picture is very do-able if you use silicone hoses. I've just changed both of them on my Griff without much major grief. Getting the old hoses was the hardest part actually.

My hoses came as part of a full kit from ACT. They might sell odd ones if you give them a ring.
