I've booked my chim to be waxoyled at a garage, that shall remain nameless, based in henley...£140/150 plus additional stuff (if wishbones are too rusty)
i'm not happy, but i haven't got the time to go far afield for this (anyway it doesn't need a service yet). Will any old garage perform this service?

What aren't you happy about?
It's taken me 2 days to scrape and brush all the loose paint, old waxoyl and surface rust off my chassis and wishbones, then pressure wash the lot. I haven't even started painting/waxoyling it yet - that's bound to be another 2 days at least. Who am I kidding, make it four!
OK, so I might be doing a more thorough job than the garage in Henley, but if they do it half decently and get the waxoyl in the important places, it sounds fair enough to me. 2 - 3 hours labour?

DIY.
I did my Griff a couple of weeks ago - took me about 5 hours on a Saturday to do it.
Firstly jack up one side and secure with axle stands (£10 from Halfords) then remove stones/debris between the body and chassis with an old (or cheap £1-2) flatblade screwdriver, then wirebrush with drill attachment for the accesible bits (outriggers, as much of wishbones as you can get) and do the rest with a standard brush (£2 from Halfords)
Hammerite (mine was silver - £5 small pot) any exposed areas as best you can and leave to set for 15-20mins (depends on ambient temp. how long)
Then get a medium can of the clear waxoyl (about £10) and one of the applicator sprayers (again £15) - I use my compressor for the above but you do need to get the waxoyl heated up a lot for it not to clog under the higher pressure.
Put the waxoyl fully submerged into a bucket of boiling water whilst you are waiting for the paint to dry this thins it a considerable amount and it goes on better.
Cover the brake assemblies with a plastic bin bag and spray away (don't wear your Sunday best though....) try to get an even coat of almost white colour as this is a good indicator of coverage (don't worry it sets almost clear)
Leave for 20 mins to harden and then do the other side.
total cost c.£45 (next year will be cheaper as you will have the spray gear and a half emtpy tin of Hammerite

... plus 5 hours of valuable weekend time @£50 per hour = £295.
HHC quote = £80. Think I'll save me time!
