2 questions from potential owner
Discussion
Hi.
A couple of quick questions if I may from a potential UK 1988 Esprit Turbo owner:
1. Do these vehicles have a 'hand brake on' warning light?
2. Does a shhhhh sound from the turbo under acceleration imply it is sucking correctly or it is leaking?
3. When would the turbo be expected to give up the ghost?
Many thanks in advance.

Firstly welcome, I'll cut straight to the point.
1. yes
2. You can here it sucking especially if you have a high flow filter installed. You will also here a 'flutter' when you shut off as the waste gate bounces.
3. As it breaks, No hard fast rule. I've done over 70k with no turbo probs. (Expect it break this week !!)

Hi,
many thanks for the welcome and your response.
There was no light indicating the hand brake was on. I realise this could potentially be many things, but could this be a real hassle to fix? ie: blown bulb
The car is absolutely standard (no high flow filter installed as far as I know). Would this still produce the shhhhh sound?
Finally, I hope your turbo doesn't go this week

What ever the problem was wit the handbrake light I sure its not that difficult to fix. Would you use it anyway, I cant say I ever have.
You do still get the shhhh and flutflut. Its part of the appeal. If it has the standard air filter I would only expect to hear the suction when using the smile pedle, but hear it you will.

Hi,
I guess you're right about the hand brake light. I'm a little concerned I'll keep pulling away with it on until I get used to the different operation of the hand brake. Not an MOT failure then?
The shhhhh sound is great. I just wanted to make sure the air is going into where it should be. A friend had a Renault 21 Turbo that kept making that noise for all the wrong reasons
Thanks again. By the way, your car looks awesome.

Hand brake: put the car on a small ramp. Release the hand brake. The car should automatically start to roll. If it doesn't: brake is still on...
Best is then to check the brake, clean everything, check the cables, etc. Just work, not money.
Woosh sound: could be that there is a leak from the turbo to the inlet plenum. Check for leaking hoses, loose connections etc. If you really doubt, put some dish washing soap around possible suspect areas. It should produce bubbles if there is a leak.
Determine whether the sound is really from leaking air or whether it has a more mechanical nature. In the latter case, the turbo is to be distrusted (bearings, etc.).

Hi Frits,
Many thanks for your reply. Sorry I couldn't reply sooner, the forum was closed yesterday evening.
I am happy that the hand brake functions correctly, it's just the light that doesn't.
Your suggestion for testing the turbo is a good one and I may try this. I don't believe the sound is of a mechanical nature so I'm happy it's not faulty.
Thanks again,
Jason
