My team mate and I spent all day on the Baja engine today, all we achieved was a small electrical fire!

The engine is turning over and "coughing" but not quite firing up.
We suspect some kind of carb/fuelling issue, but are running out of time to blindly faff.

If anyone knows about old VW engines and can spare a couple of hours next weekend in exchange for a few beer tokens, we would be so grateful!

I really need to make firm plans though so it's ready for Goodwood in the 5th April.

Thanks smile

(or if you know anyone please pass on my details etc)

What has been done to the engine?

Full strip down and re-build? Or is it more of a "was running ok but now won't start"?

It's a long time sinse I did a full re-build on mine (1995) but IIRC it is quite easy to get the timing out by 180 degrees.

Rach,

You should try my old mate Jay at:

Efefigy
Unit 5
45 Lincoln Street
Hull
HU2 0PB

Mob:07515 821929

He's been working on aircooled V-Dubs since we were kids.

I think she's after freebies fellas, im sure she has someone she can go to and pay for their services in mind as a fall back anyway.

(if you're about to type a reply full of inuendo and connotations based on the above...grow up!)

...unless its a lady, in which case fire away! biggrin

Thanks guys, Mighty I'll give him a bell if I don't have any joy on Wednesday, I'm ready to spend a bit of cash just to have the damn thing running grrrr!

CoolC - the engine was runing when it was in someone elses Bug, but after being transferred to mine it started but wouldn't run unless you were keeping the rev's up.
I went to check the timing and the points were pretty shot, so I replaced them and the condensor. But now I can't seem to get the timing light to come on!
Yesterday we got the engine turning over and not quite starting, just coughing.
There doesnt seem to be fuel coming through the mechinical pump but the electric one brings it up.

We took the carb off and cleaned it, all the jets seem fine.

But still the same thing!

I do think the timing is way out, but neither of us really know what we're doing to put it right, just going by the Haynes book of lies and the Muir VW book (which give different instructions)

My Dad has Weds off and is going to have a tinker, he used to do his own cars back in the day. I'm out and about getting my tax bill (arrghh)!
If he can't sort if I'll call Efeigy and get them to collect it, unless he fancies a ride out to mine.

Thanks for the replies so far smile

Have a check of the rubber connections on the inlet manifold, it sounds similar to a problem I had once, it turned out to be an air leek on the inlet side where the rubbers had perrished.

Ah someone had mentioned spraying WD40 all over - the engine - to check for air leaks!

I think I should just bite the bullet and get him off to Jay's for a make-over. I need to get it done right to get 21,000 miles to Oz!

Wooohoooo! He lives!

Took him round to an old boy in the village yesterday and he was up at 7 and round my Dad's at 8 getting parts out of the garage!

Just had a text that he's running and the guy is still tinkering...

I hope he's on the drive waiting for me when I get home from work tonight

woohoo
