What have I done!!! I have just agreed to buy my sons mini off him, we have spent lots of time doing it up after buying it from my brother 2 years ago for £1000, talk about keep it in the family!, its a 94 1275 sprite, now with stage 1 kit, hi-lows, twin exit zorst, new sills and rear valance, new Stainless grill and bumpers, bilstein shocks, wide arches/ 13" deep dish superlight alloys(Graphite grey)with 175 yoko's, walnut dash,Black leather momo 3 spoke. also iridium? lights, new brakes (standard)new rad and hoses, its graphite met grey with satin black roof and bonnet. a bit of nastiness( rust on door tops and bellow wind screen), blueish grey velour interior and black carpets, 74000 miles, runs and sounds great but..... suffers from pre ignition when hot, brakes feel wooden, and the lights are crap, am giving him £2200 so he can buy a Golf because he has got his long term girlfriend up the duff rolleyes( fool)does around 500 miles a week commuting and needs some thing bigger, more reliable and economical to own, I just couldn't bear to see all the effort we have put in go to someone else so there you have it. looks like I'm gunna be joining you other mini nutters, It wont be my daily drive as we have two other cars (jag s type 07 / Shogun 04) oh and my proper toy.. a 95 Caterham 7 HPC with 190bhp 2.0 red top on twin 45's, opinions please on price and what i can do about said problems, Cheers folks.

Brakes and Lights are typical mini behaviour, the pinking issue sounds like one of 2 things:

1. The tune of the engine is setup for high grade fuel or leaded i.e. 98ron or higher. And you're running it on standard unleaded.

2. The mixture or ignition advance are out (or both)

Basically the car needs a tune up.

That engine should be SPI, has it been replaced with a carb setup?

Also the exhaust setup could be interfering.

Has it had its head gasket replaced and had a heavy skim?

The lights can be replaced with Halogens, get the E marked ones, once fitted you'll need a garage to align them.

sorry its not a sprite its a mayfair. its on a single carb.

I'm also wrong about my definition of pre ignition, what i meant was its dieseling or running on for a bit when you shut off the ignition, not pinking ( i'll get back into the terminology quickly, its been a good few years since i had to do any fettling) I presume this to be down to carbon build up on the top of the pistons and it glowing when the engine is hot, causing it to burn any fuel deposits hanging around, does any body know of a cure for this other than a strip down and de-coke?.

what replacement brake pads does anybody recommend as a direct replacement, are the EBC greenstuff ones any good?
Cheers

Minis often 'run-on' after switching off. We used to joke aboiut getting to the end of a rally, switching off, having breakfast and finding it was still 'running-on' when we came to go home! Mine does this, so Iput it in first gear, switch off and then let the clutch in.
That stops it!

MG Metro's did this from the factory and had an Anti run on valve fitted (basically an electronically controlled vent to atmosphere triggered on ignition off - which with some ingenuity could be fitted).

Yes - You have lost your mind and welcome.

I lost mine years ago. My stable consists of a "Cooperised" Mayfair (10" wheels of course), a restored van fitted with an AC Dodd 1275 unit, a Paul Smith LE, a Scamp, an Ultima GTR (there we have the two extremes of the kit car world) and a Ducati Hailwood Replica motorbike.

If a mini doesn't run on then it needs a faster engine!

I've tried a couple of anti run on valves to do great effect, so use the first gear method also!
