Doesn't happen all the time but often when under 40mph (so through villages when you're supposed to be looking good, so is embarrassing) I have a really loud clicking noise from the back ofthe car, in sync with the wheels turning.
I'm sure it has something to do with brakes as if I add a little pressure to the brakes it goes away. Anyone experienced this? what could it be?

Brake pads.

If it bothers you that much take the pads out, put some silicon on the back of the pads, put them back in and press the brake pedal.

This will stick the pads to the caliper piston and hopefully stop your clicking.

Might sound silly but have you checked your back tyres for a stone wedged in the tread?
I had something similar ages ago and it drove me mad looking for it - turned out to be a pebble in the tyre clicking on the road - it was far louder than I would have thought possible.

thought that too, had tyres changed (not cause of that) and noise still there, goes away when brakes are applied too.

It's the brakes; I had it too after new pads - bl00dy annoying, tick, tick, tick - one of those 'oh no, what's that, hope it's not expensive' moments.

Mine disappeared when lightly touching the brakes whilst moving, which didn't inspire confidence, but nothing to worry about mechanically - thankfully.

Mine was fixed with some 'stuff' behind the pads which solved this and excessive brake squealing.

I have a problem with this as well, only on 1 rear wheel, and I can see what you are saying with the stuff behind the pads but........will this not cause problems latter down the line when changing your worn out pads. You will then have to try and clean this off the pistons. Are you not just curing the syptoms rather than tackling the root cause.

Or am I being a mechanical numpty again.

Use some Grease, should do the same job, just stops the pad from slapping around

I put a thread up on this recently. It was my offside rear pads clicking away. I greased them up with copperslip first. That lasted all of two days, then I took the advice of people on here and used some silicone, result no ticking, cheers lads.

There is also alot of overhang on the pad itself, this combined with the rough corrosion on the outside edge, where the vents are can cause this. If you take a soft pad around the outside and get rid of the excess rust and put a slight chamfer on the corner it helps shut it up. Or go on a track day then the pads "machine" it for you! smile
