Hi,
my Citroen AX has started to misbehave the symptoms are as follows:

1. Setting off from a junction, enough revs, let in clutch and whoah! it is running on kangaroo juice. Cure? More revs!

2. Climbing up a hill road speed drops, push the accelerator pedal down further and it runs on kangaroo juice again. Cure? Change down and use more revs!

3. There is a slight backfire/pop as I blip the accelerator when approacing my favourite roundabout.

4. When starting from cold it needs about a minute to compose itself and get all the cylinders to cooperate (which shouldn'd be difficult as there are only four and they are small and close together.

5. The "check engine" light never lights unless I let it stall (which I think is normal).

This seems to be getting gradually worse. Fuel economy does not appear to be suffering. I have changed the spark plug leads - no improvement. I have just changed the spark plugs but haven't tried it yet as I'm waiting for the traffic to clear.

Engine is a 1996 1.0 litre single-point injection type with catalytic converter, it has done 104000 miles and averages 450 miles per week. The business end of the 'plugs I just removed look a bit pale, certainly you wouldn't describe them as "biscuit coloured", more a "milky tea" shade.

Any ideas where I could look for a cause?
