Hi, I'm thinking of replacing the distributor in my 65 E-type 4.2 and upgrading to electronic ignition. I've heard that the Pertronix system seems to be reliable - any views on this or any other alternatives?

Thank you,

Dom

I've had a Petronix in my XK150 for the last couple of years. Chris and RGC was complaining about the points they get these days and suggested that they fit the Petronix as a way of getting rid of one variable when trying to get my car ready for a trackday after I'd upgraded the carbs.

I'm in the middle of having a 4.2 race engine fitted into the car and I mentioned a 123 as an option to CKL mostly because the engine being fitted didn't have a dissy. CKL said they'd been trying these recently and were very happy with what they'd seen. So my 150 will be moving to a 123 Ignition system when it all goes back together over the next few weeks.

I'll let you know how I get on with it.

You could try asking in the Yesterday's Heros forum too, there are some E-Type owners hanging out there

Hi, thanks for the info - I've decided to go for the 123, it seems to have a number of good reports from various forums..

Somewhere there is a firm who manufacture a fully mapped ignition system for E Types. IIRC Jaguar World did a back to back comparison a long while ago between this system and a standard E Type and came away really impressed.

It might, just might, be a company called Paul Roach and Partners in Sudbury, Suffolk. Memory is more than hazy on this but could be worth a call to either them or Jaguar World magazine
