All of a sudden
Discussion
I have a very noisy knocking when I go over bumpy roads. Firstly thought my footpump was loose in the boot, but sounds like rear suspension. Any ideas? Car has only done 25k. Going to wheel her into the local garage to check it's alright to hobble home. Got no AA! I was so looking forward to enjoying the spring this week. Thoughts?

You're really going to have to get under there and have a look before deciding whether to drive 30 miles, as it could be a whole variety of things from the completely trivial to the downright dangerous.
If you say it's only on bumpy roads, then I'd be disinclined to blame diff of diff mounts, as you'd probably be hearing a knocking as you come on and off the power, even on a flat surface.
Hopefully, it'll be exhaust related (broken mount or snapped mounting rubber) - get under and give it a good frim wiggle.
You could have broken a spring - give the car a good hard push down either side and see if anything feels amiss. Maybe even take each rear wheel off and give the whole suspension an eyeball.
It could also be one of the suspension pick-up points on the chassis (or even part of the chassis itself) has broken due to corrosion.
If it's either of the latter things, then the car is most definitely not safe to drive, but you really should have a good look before deciding to drive on it anyway.
Oh, and take out some breakdown cover, you mentalist

^^^ what he said + with the AA add parts insurance as well - they'll pay up to £2,500 a year in £500 increments - i.e. to fix this would have been free.
Do you get the knocking when changing gear (but from the back, not the gearbox) + between on power, off power?
If so, this could be the connection between the diff and the chassis being corroded - I got this and thought £000's - just a new bracket for a couple of quid + drove 70 miles to the garage very, very smoothly.

I had that, use to drive me mad, every bump in the road... creek creek. It was the drop link on the anti roll bar, or thats what the garage told me.
And so it was! Thankfully the local garage did excellent repair on the drop link to get me home. Mentalists rule!! Thanks for all the advice and entertainment.Gassing Station | Cerbera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
