Just thought I would ask. I have a Jag XJS currently in my garage that is in good nick other than an intermittent gearbox fault.

The gearbox warning light comes on now 50% of the time (i.e 50% of start ups). When its on it appears to have one forward gear though it will go into R and P and N but with a slight jolt.

When the light isn't on it appears to be fine and smoothly engages each gear and runs up and down nicely.

Has any one any ideas? I believe its the GM400 4 speed auto gearbox. Its a '92 coupe.

It will have a ZF 4HP24 in there.

First step is to have the gearbox fault code pulled and find out what is doing it.

The key to transmission repairs is not to fall into the trap of saying PXXXX code means Change the Rotary switch for example. It DOES NOT!!!!!

What it does mean is that that circuit or symptom is what is causing the light to be flashed on, so it could be a mechanical, hydraulic or electrical issue as appropriate. And in the case of solenoids it could be the solenoid, but it could equally be any of the wires leading to the electronic controller from that solenoid. Pay particular attention to harness plugs in the engine bay as they are often sites where water gets in, together with splices in the wiring loom.

Thank you very much, help appreciated. I will have it checked out and then chase the fault.
