Does anyone know if there is a fix for this? It went before and I had a look but couldn't find anything other than a youtube video of a guy tapping the top of his xbox.

I know I could wrap it in a towel and get it to RROD and then send it to Microsoft, but I doubt that they would swap the disc drive for free as well. I think they usually charge 60 quid or so. And then theres the fact I've got to wait for three weeks while its sorted and not knowing if it will be FOC.

Its seriously annoying. I'm thinking I might go out and get one of those red Elites from GAME sometime soon if I have no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you get the message of 'put this disc in an xbox360' or something like that?

Thats what mine is doing so im going to change the laser. They are only £6 online and doesnt look too hard to change. You can also change the whole drive but looks much more of a pain.

Microsoft wanted £98 to fix it. er...no.

Thanks very much for your help Dave.

I was quite looking forward to getting myself a new Elite with the Jasper circuit board, but I had a bit of a fiddle with a cottom bud as there was an incredible amount of dust in there. Had a bit of a shifty and now it seems to be working!

All in all saved myself £229. Just have to hope the thing isn't actually fked and was just dusty.

I envisage replacing it eventually though, as I'll need a bigger HDD.

The elite is still prone to rrod, ive had both the original unit and the elite rrod on me before I gave up and went over to the darkside

Glad you got it fixed simply, had a problem myself recently (posted on PH) and the solution was glueing the magnet that holds the disc in place, seems all too common the disc drive failings, and there isn't 1 common fault with them, there are several.

Yeh I knew about that thats why I was going to go for the limited edition model with the new Jasper chipset. Supposed to be much improved.
