Patchy fog tonight and I've noticed that on my 1999 Chimaera the rear fog light goes out - along with the tell-tale on the button - when I push for main beam. If I pull for temporary main beam it stays on.

Is this supposed to happen? "Do they all do that sir?"

I noticed that on my 96 chim, and thought it was the wiring fecked cos some toe rag ripped the radio out and mashed the panel.. but if they all do that i feel much better.

maybe pw doesnt like fog light numpties and if you can use main beam it aint foggy enough for fog lights...

either that or the wiring carnt cope !!!!

Yep - spotted this on my '97. No idea why - without front fog lights I found main beam quite handy going over the Scottish border on Friday. Tempted to try to do something about it at some point in the future, but need to work out why it's like that and get my other electrical problems sorted out before I even consider anything else...

I would assume that this is supposed to happen, a few years ago I had a car that did this and it said it was supposed to in the hand book, and I have had others since.

All I would say is if its not foggy enough to be blinded by your main beam then its not foggy enough for your rear fog lights.

Wish they could do similar with Saxo's and the like and their front fog lights.
The amount of muppets that drive along in bright sunshine lit up like a bloody lantern is diabolical.

What they don't realise is if you are in a low car all you get is a face full of white light - not very safe!

In fact I did have a car that if you put the headlights on main all the fog lights went out - wonder which it was?

Legal requirement.

Oh! My defence M'Lud is that it was patches of dense fog so I had my rear fogs on (for the car I couldn't see behind me) but had my beam on for the clearer bits.

Must have looked odd from behind!

I wonder if our other car does this?

Which bit - fog lights staying on when full beam are flashed, going off when full beams are switch on, or both?

Neither.

It is not a legal requirement for your fog lights (front or rear) to extinguish on main beam. It is only a requirement that they can only be switched on with side lights and not independently switched.

It just makes sense that they should extinguish with main beam. As said before, if you can drive with main beam, then it ain't that foggy!

Agreed, must look odd in patchy fog though

well, our Audi does *not* extinguish the rear fogs when main beam is applied, so I guess it's not a legal requirement? I think I'll have a word with Offords next time I'm in.

On most recent cars that I have owned the rear fogs go out when the main beam is on, ford's vauxhals etc so I would not worry about it
