My service light has come on :(
Discussion
On the way home from work in the 111r today, the service light came on. Is there anyway I can self diagnose the problem? Can I plug it into my own laptop for free rather than drive it to a garage then pay someone else to do the same thing?
Bit gutted - only had it for 4 weeks and 800 miles, albeit the best 800 miles in the world ever!
Any help gratefully received.

Think you are talking about the MIL light which diagnoses a fault- there is no service light. Used to get this a lot on my old K-Series (fault code said it was a mis-fire) although i never felt a mis-fire. As tony said above, as long as not flashing it will be ok and will go out after 4/5 restarts (although the car needs to be driven 4/5 times not turned on and off that many times!).
Dont worry about it, it will be fine

Hey Andy, still got the car and running okay I take it? Planning a TD soon, up for a blast at Combe?Took it into garage and they said that the fault was "non specific", but mentioned something about a dicky misfire sensor on the cramkshaft in the earlier S2s. He said when I take it in for service he might need to give it a software update.
Sorry, let me say that again, he wants to give my car a software update. I spent the whole drive home talking like KITT from Knightrider because of that comment... "Michael, I need a software update..." etc.
Anyway, he turned the light off, so problem solved (kind of, for now).

It's super sensitive, mine came on randomly, went off half an hour later and that was the last I have seen of mine. One person said putting the a/c on in traffic triggered theirs. General rule is that it is a very minor problem that has been detected unless the light is actually flashing. Sorry, let me say that again, he wants to give my car a software update. Completely contradicating what I said about sensitivity, I took the cat off my car and it was about 100 miles before the light came on (presuambly telling me I have a cat problem)!
