Hi

I am looking at buying a 03 Audi A4 Avant 1.8T. There are cars about that are 5 speed and some that are 6 speed.

The question I cant find an answer to is what mph per 1000 rpm in top gear each does.

I have an old 1.8T Passat on LPG that I have done 130k miles in. The turbo is just working at motorway speeds of around 80, which hammers the MPG. I am wondering if the 6 speed is a sort of overdrive equivelent that might help reduce the fuel costs?

Plus of course most of the 6 speed cars are 190 bhp not 163, so this way I justify buying a faster car!!!!

thanks

Not quite the same engines, but we went from a 2.4SE Avant 5 speed to a 3.0 Sport Avant Quattro 6 speed (both petrol) and I was surprised to see that the MPG improved in the latter.

As a matter of personal preference, 5 speed gearboxes now seem like the modern day equivalent of a Mini Metro to me....

Top gear ratios will be very close to each other, all the ratios are spread out between the other gears. With 6 speed boxes first gear is very short, ok if you are towing .
