Hi Guys

Had my SVA today at Birmingham but sadly the car failed.
Not too unhappy total of 8 fails.
1)retaining bolt for roof aerial not radiused - needs cover.
2)Gear change rose joint and uj in cockpit not radiused - needs cover.
3)Emblem on front of speakers in footwell not radiused - needs filing down.
4)edges of metal plate under dash (air con evaporator mount plate), bare edges - forgot to put rubber trim on DOH!
5)No rear reflectors - Halfords stick on £2
6)Filler neck breather pipe (to go to charcoal filter in future) not secured - needs tywrap to chassis

7)Emissions 7% CO2 should be less than 4.5%
8)Verify age of block (1981) Mortec printout not sufficient.

Can anyone help with number 8. The tester who was a thoroughly nice chap by the way, says a publication along the lines of ' History of the Chevrolet engine', with some kind of chronological reference for casting numbers would be suitable. Anyone know of a book like this. Title/Author/ISBN would be great.

I know its a failure but i cant help feeling really pleased with the lack of serious problems.
I drove the car to the test station about 20 miles and absolutely no problems. The drive home was better, i gave it a bit of welly, and its bloody quick and drives much better when you push it than when you try to drive nicely.
Overall a pretty good day i think, very interesting and most importantly not ready to slash my wrists after 4 years of building.

Dave

Haynes Techbook (American) Chevrolet engine overhaul manual ISBN 1 85010 762 9
David Visard How to rebuild your Small Block Chevy ISBN 1 55788 029 8

PM me with what you have as an engine number and casting numbers and I will look and confirm they tell you what you want to know.

If it's in there then you are welcome to borrow the books or I can scan the pages if he will accept that.

Steve

ETA Well done on the near pass. My fail with the Dakar ran into four pages.

Don't forget the reflectors must be vertical or they will fail.

Gear shift rose joint just needs wrapping in self amalgamating tape. It will then either pass the radius or be exempt having a shore hardness less than 50.

As it goes not too bad, CO and verification I guess are the major ones, the others are just annoying little things. . . you got through the brake/balance bar test ok then?
As Steve said, well done on your near pass and as Ditto said about bloody time biggrin

About bloody time seems to be a recurring theme here! Look ive just treated the car as a nice sort of ongoing hobby (apart from when things didnt go well so stayed away from the garage for weeks smash ).

I will hope to get in again for about 3 weeks time (i'm away next week) but it is so good to have reached the end.

Steve i'll be in touch later when i get back home and if all is ok i will 'av a borra' if you dont mind.

I to look forward to a jaunt to Stoneleigh as well, another 20 mile trip lol.

Dave

p.s.
no probs with the brake bias, breezed through. i decided to connect the opposite way round to the manual (see various threads on this subject).
I did a lot of work on noise with the help of SS, i now have repackable silencers and the noise reading was 94.9dBa @3200rpm - well chuffed with that.

it used to be possible to put "engine of unknown origin" on the SVA, i did this with mine some years ago, this meant no emissions needed except for a smoke test. The tester was most upset! Have they closed this loophole? If not it gets you around all emissions tests.

They must have changed it because the inspector said if i cant prove its age it would be tested as a new engine with cats, and i think he said the target is 0.4% gulp!!!!

I think mine benefited from a loophole as well where if the motor fitted at time of registration is old then C02/emssions are not registered or required (can anyone expand here, is a pre-72 block that's needed?).
My GTR was first registered with an old v6 motor and now doesn't have anything on the log book about C02/emissions even though the 5.7 is listed as it's current motor. I checked my last MOT and the LT5 was blowing 10.2% CO2 but still it past okay.
Is there a way you can drop an 'old' motor in to get the car first registered then revert to your current motor?
Expensive yes, but at least you'll never have a C02 limit again (god I hope I'm not wrong here cos' mine is currently running straight through pipes).

The emissions requirement all revolves around the ‘Effective Date’ of the engine. This being the 1st January before the date of manufacture of the engine. If you cannot prove the manf. Date then you will be tested as the engine being 1st August 1997 Fast Idle (2500 to 3000rpm) CO<=0.3% HC<=200ppm Lambda 0.97 to 1.03 Idle (450 to 1500rpm) CO<=0.3%. i.e. cat reqd.

Prove the engine date and:-
Before 1st Aug 1975……….Visual only.
Before 31st July 1986……… Visual + CO<=4.5% HC<=1200ppm
Before 31st July 1992……… Visual + CO<=3.5% HC<=1200ppm
Before 31st July 1995……… CO<=3.5% HC<=1200ppm
After 1st Aug 1995……… Fast Idle (2500 to 3000rpm) CO<=0.3% HC<=200ppm Lambda 0.97 to 1.03 Idle (450 to 1500rpm) CO<=0.3%. i.e. cat reqd.

Reference the old engine line…..don’t forget that if you want your Ultima to have a current registration and not a Q then you will need to prove the engine is ‘Re-manufactured’ (not just changing the plugs and points).

Needs to include "to as new" or similar doesn't it? I remember SVA'ing the westie and we had remanufactured on the invoice, but they insisted it needed to state something similar to the above.

it must be "do able" mine was reg as new (not q plate) and no cats etc. I am sure there is some "tick in the box" wording - IE Engine of unknown origin were my words I put on the form. If you can get the right words the jobworth boys at the SVA cant complain. I thought the factory were good at this? They seem to know the rules VERY well...... and they dont run cats on any ultima to my knowledge....they may be worth trying if you havent already...

Say one has a pre 1992 engine but the car it came from had cats on, do you know if the engine came from a car with cats on does it need to have cats on to pass SVA/IVA?

Cheers, Rich

As you can see from the list anything before 31st July 1995 will pass quite happily without a cat. You only have to prove the engines age. Yes, cats may have been fitted in the intervening years on some cars but cats became compulsory after 1st Aug 1995 on all cars so that is why that is the break point.

Your car is looking very good, at least you wont have emissions or origins to worry about.
