Towbar mounted rack.

Towbars ARE available for these cars. I'm getting round to welding my own up though, which will be modified so as not actually to have a ball/swan neck on the car, jsut a very discreet mounting plate near the exhaust back box.

My rack (picked up for 25 quid 2nd hand) will then bolt directly to this. Should be solid and secure.

Although for the time being, when its just me, my bike (Santa Cruz Heckler, so quite big) goes inside and my kit goes in the boot.

If you stick with a regular rack, then the Saris Bones is probably your best bet. I'd consider removing the wheels (to lessen the weight on the rack) though, even if it's just one 450lb bike you're carrying.

I like the idea above though, good thinking. Can't beat a solid connection for security/peace of mind smile

So, if I get a boot rack for my MX5, I can take my bike on it safely? How would I go about securing said bike on to the rack?

Would two bikes be pushing it?

Yup, a normal rack is fine, its just not practical - you have to put your kit in the boot, THEN fit the rack, and once fitted you cant get in the boot.

2 bikes is pushing it as the boot lid is aluminium and the bumpers are not the sturdy.
