I want to sell my TVR and keep my private plate, but at present the car isn't taxed or mot'd. Is there anyway I can keep my plate without getting an MOT and tax? That's impossible btw cause the car is in pieces.

No - Same thing happened to me a few years back. If the car is not MOT'd or Taxed, then you can't retain the numer.

sorry don't want to sound argumentative, but you can put your number on retention. i.e. not on a car at all. i have just done this for my wifes car last month. it will cost you about £100 pounds. this is for the future transfer fee to another vehicle and £25 for the annual retention fee.
all you need do is right it off, or sell it so to speak (could be for a pound) and DVLA will assign a new number to the existing car.

Yes that is true, however I bet you were asked to provide the MOT certificate and tax disc number no? The usual line is that the car must be taxed and mot'd in order to get the plate off it, I think in reality with the tax at least (and possibly the mot not sure) there is a time period after which you can still apply and it is discretionary. If it's been more than about 12 months since it was last taxed then I think it's game over completely.

we had to provide the log book of the car the new number was going on, get the tax disk changed and prove that the car was MOT'd for the new number. nothing was requested for the old number that we put on retention.
i thought that was the point of retention, i.e to keep the number untill you had something to put it on.

Jensen and TC are right, the car the reg is coming off has to be MOT'd and taxed. If you weren't asked to provide documentary evidence then they may well have done a DVLA check on the reg number.

I just called the DVLA myself, as I'm pretty much in the same situation as you. All the details in the link above are correct. So if your MOT and TAX expired within the last 12 months (no longer), you can retain the numberplate and the car will be given an age related plate.

Anybody want a project Cerbera? biggrin
