Quick question re: rear tyre size....

...will 265/40Y18's fit on the rear, or will they be scuffed on the wheel arch? Anyone gone this wide?

i use 255/35/18 without rubbing.

I run 255/35 on the back of mine with no problems as well. I think you may need to stick to a 35 profile though as the extra height from the 40 may be too much. It also depends on the ride height of your car and also the brand of tyre, as some actually measure wider than others for a given size.
