Gallardo Dream becoming a possibility?
Discussion
Evening. I know there has been a few threads similar to this, but thought I would put up a new one. I have recently sold my TVR T350C (main reason for selling was to free up some money) but now I'm already missing it.
So decided to have a look into maybe buying a Gallardo, and it doesn't look too far away. The insurance is coming in lower than expected, and the finance quotes I have been getting have been around what I was paying for the TVR.
The only stumbling block is the running costs. I worked out roughly I was paying £400 a month to run the TVR (2 services and other bits a bobs) before including petrol. How far off is this for running a older Gallardo? I will do under 6000 miles a year I'd imagine. Would £4/5k a year be enough?
I know I'm really asking how long is a piece of string, but I think I'm really just looking for some opinions (or someone to talk me into it!)
Cheers

Hi Justin
We have had ours for over 4 years now. Insured with AON, amazingly good price. If you are a member of LCUK you get an even better price. Richard is always amazed at how economical it is on fuel, you can run on a very light foot just under the 3000 revs and will return 18 mpg no trouble. Flooring it for fun is when you hear it slurp! Annual service at LHW was about 2K and a new set of tyres was £996 fitted. A new clutch will be between 2,500 and 3,000 depending on who you talk to.
The fun we have is priceless! Enjoy if you can

Make sure the Gallardo you buy has the latest sintered clutch as this is (apparently) the one to have - he advised, from the depths of his wide experience of Gallardo driving being a few dozen hundred of yards or perhaps less and many moments standing near folk like RKB & Tannucat's and other Gallardo owner's cars...
and obviously get a car that's had good servicing (main dealer etc, recognised semi-official or well known indies but no muppets, you'll know who they are soon enough if you stick around here and ask...) and not too many fly-by-night owners who have treated the car like a minicab or a kitchen appliance.
Having found one, checked it out to every possible degree of checking possibleness, you should get a Lamborghini that should equal almost endless big delight...
Also, you could join LCUK as well, then you could compare those ker-azeee paint colours, bonkers exhaust noise, flappy paddle or flappy stick gearchanges, different head-the-ball wheels and much else along with others with very similar afflictions! You might get to have a pleasantly heated debate with folk who own soon-to-be restored Espadas or the Countach Clan or even the Diablo massive...
Because I know RKB & Tannucats don't have a Botophucket account (as yet!), here's their ace car:

edited to add: and with that big house and all that land you'd think they'd park the car in something like a garage, but no, middle of a field, every night, rain or shine, ice or fog...

one extra thing you need to look at.
although it's not a cost you can easily quantify.
what is the massive grin on your face worth to you?
Huge! Thats what I miss about the TVR.. Can imagine the Gallardo is on a different level. although it's not a cost you can easily quantify.

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated!
Realistically, how often does the clutch need changed? and 18mpg is about the best it will get? More I think about it, more I'm convincing myself!
Also text the old man last night saying I've found a car I fancy, when he found out what it was, he said I was off my head! Then when I said I'd insure him, he quickly came round to the idea!

There are many Gallardo owners who don't drive slowly, don't drive like Grannies on Prozac but do have a clutch fitted to their Gallardo which has exceeded some 30,000 miles or more... one or two of them used to post here on PistonHeads but must have grown tired of the endless bullshidt about Gallardo clutches being weaker than that same Prozac-loaded Grannies' tea.
It's all about the ability to drive properly - why some people ever just wanted to play traffic light b
ks with chavs in tarted up Corsa's is, erm, at least a mystery.
As mentioned the (revision 'E' ?????) sintered clutch should last for longer than most cars with as much power as a Gallardo has but, like any mighty car, won't take Toyota minicab user levels of abuse and endless slipping tactics.
Again, only as far as I know, there isn't really any difference in clutch wear between e-gear and manual... there was once someone here who could have given you the full chapter and verse on all that but see the paragraph above with the weak tea comment...
As a passenger in an 04 Gallardo a few years ago, whilst coasting along behind a steady 75 - 80 mph line of traffic on the M? around mid-afternoon on a day in July, the computer showed something like 50 mpg was the order of the moment.
Just because that figure became rather less than 6 mpg a few seconds later as the driver decided to prove a point is neither here nor there... something was said about Italy, 5 litres, 'not normal' and exhausts growling and 'petrol costs - so-what?' closely followed by plenty of wide grinning.
Grinning like the Cheshire cat is a built-in feature of the Gallardo.
btw: just who is this fatty called 666 then? What I should have written was obviously 'Diablo Massive' in order to avoid confusion, not least my own...

Thanks again for the quick reply. Being honest I fancy the E Gear purely because I'm used to manuals, and I guess it would be part of the excitement having the paddles to play with!
Will keep my eye on the classifieds the next couple of weeks. I have already seen a couple I like, but don't want to rush in and go for the first one I see!

We actually went to see the Espada that has now been sprayed its original colour of brown. When I have worked out how to post the pictures
I will share them with you.

I'm glad I'm running a Lambo, 'cos I couldn't afford those sort of running costs!!
