The Staffs and Shrops monthly Pistonheads meet has been run for sometime at The Last Inn near Newport. This venue was chosen mainly because it was Central(ish) for Telford and Stafford Pistonheads people.

The Last has served us well and I would like to thank the landlord and bar staff for their hospitality. It is now time for change as there is now a Quiz night every monday which seems to be doing well for the pub. I can see in the summer months that there may be difficulties with car parking and getting served so a new venue is needed.

On this fine Friday afternoon I took the Seven out to a few pubs and took some photos. Us Staffs/Shrops PH'ers are always open to sugestions but my shortlist is as follows.

Please Vote - the pub with the highest number of votes will be the chosen venue for the distant future.

I believe the pub must satisfy three key points:

1) Adequate Car Parking
2) Location in relation to Stafford, Telford and Shewsbury (amongst other towns)
3) Preferably with a beer garden adjacent to the Car Park so in the Summer months we can sit down and admire the cars.

PUB 1 - The Red Lion at Sutton, Nr Newport (A519 Newport to Eccleshall Road)

Traditional Country Pub, large Car Park, Garden overlooking car park

PUB 2 - The Shropshire, Haughton (A518 Stafford to Newport Road)

Village Location, Large Restaurant, Garden overlooking Car Park

PUB 3 - The Lamb, Edgmond (Newport to Shrewsbury Road)

Large Car Park, Large Beer garden adjacent to Car Park

PUB 4 - The Navigation, Gnosall (A518 Stafford to Newport Road)

Beer Garden Overlooking Car Park, next to Canal

Please Vote, I honestly think all of them are suitable and are easy to get to so I suppose its down to personal preference. Let the best pub win!

Aaargh, too much choice! wink

I have personal experience of the Lamb and Navigation, both are good - but, from the pics I like to look of the Shropshire, so that gets my vote.

The Red Lion @ Sutton gets my vote. More of a traditional country pub than the others and closer to my home! Second would probably The Lamb. Having given it a bit more thought, I do think Newport is central for Stafford, Telford and myself coming from a northerly direction so either would do. Could give the Red Lion a try since some of you have already been to The Lamb (was it when the Last Inn had catering problems??).

I think they are all fine. I like the Navigation for its canal side bit.

The Lamb is a nice spot, and a nice hostelry.

A left-field choice could be The White House at Muxton. Large car park right next to the large beer garden at the front of the hotel. Plenty of seating under large trees, and pretty agreeable of a summer evening. I can take some pics if it'll help.

My first choice would be the Red Lion at Sutton .
How about looking at the Muxton one before the vote closes?

Really, they all look good! Like the whole canal side thing at the navigation, but that could mean it get's particuarly busy in the summer. In thereory, there should be plenty of parking though!

There seems to be one HUGE omission from this debate though! Which serves the best beer!? I'm a poncy lager drinker myself, so as long as there's a couple of nice continetals on offer im a happy man drink

Well spotted - I was kind of assuming all the pubs had real ale?

Couple of others to muddy the water a bit:

The Fox at Chetwynd Aston, about 2 mins from The Last Inn

http://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/fox/home/

The Red Lion at Great Chatwell

The Fox, in particular, serves a great range of ales and continental beers. It's in the 2009 AA Good Pub Guide, and I can vouch for the food quality. Car park is on the small side, though.

Hi Paul, why don't we try a few of the hostelries. It's a pretty constant group of us now and shouldn't be a problem in everyone getting to the nominated pub.

The Fox would be my number one choice as the atmosphere, food, and beer garden are superb and I even drove past on friday ....but.... at 3.30 on a Friday afternoon the car park was almost full so I can only imagine what a warm summers evening would be like. For this I wouldnt recommend it for a meet but anyone wanting a lovely meet try it as its both mine and my wifes favourite eating place!

I'm beginning to warm to this idea as I cant remember a meet where someone has just turned up thinking 'Its Pistonheads meet tonight I will go and see who is there!'

How about we try a mix of pubs over the forthcoming months and see what people think: We can do the Navi and The Shropshire in one night even when the nights are at there lightest!

So feel free to add to the list:

APRIL - Red Lion, Sutton
MAY - The White House, Muxton
JUNE - The Shropshire, Haughton / The Navigation, Gnosall
JULY - The Lamb, Edgmond
AUGUST -
SEPTEMBER -
OCTOBER -

If anyone likes the idea of a short(ish) drive and incorporate two pubs in one night then we could always do the Red Lion and The Lamb in one night , other sugestions welcome.

Two hostelries per meet sounds good. As does a different one per month.
