I've just changed the battery in mty 2001 Mondeo. When I turn the ignition on I just get a strage noise from the fron left of the engine bay. Sounds like one of the relays continually switching but I can't find which one or if this is in fact the poblem. It seems as though the sound is coming from underneath the relays but I'm not sure whats under there. All electrics seem to be working but it won;t turn over.

I changed the battery without rellyt thinking about it as it's a routine task and I'm now wondering if I re-connected the terminals in the correct order and if not whether this may explain whatever I've done.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a flat battery to me. Does it go DakkaDakkaDakkaDakkaDakkaDakka?

That is the sound of the starter solenoid switching in and out rapidly.

Thanks for the reply. I know what you mean but I'm pretty sure it's not that. The noise happens when you have the ignition in position 2 - and continues when you try to crank the engine over. It's a much faster noise than you are describing and does not sound at all mechanical. I've put the battery on charge just in case.

I've changed the battery back to the original one as that was failing rather than already failed and the symptoms remained the same (when I've had a flat battery before it was exactly as described earlier.

Something else I've noticed is that the windows don't close automatically any more i.e. you have to hold the button all the time to get them to close. Not sure how this could be related or if anyone else had had a similar problem.

hi there, right in relation to the windows that is because you have removed all life and the window motors have lost there "set range" to set them again start with the window closed, open the window fully, when window is all the way down let go and then hold it down again for about 5 secs, then hold button up to close the window, when window is closed let go and then press it up again for 5 secs, this should now have set the windows,

as for the battery problem, is the battery exactley the same? terminals on the same side etc, (im not saying you got out of bed without your brain or nothing but have made this mistake once after fitting hundreds of batterys before opps), if there is a chance you may have fitted the wrong way around you may have blown the main ignition fuse which causes very similar problems to what you are describing, eware garages will tell you that you have blown the ecu and its gonna cost you this much to get sorted, other than this im fairly stumped

all the best and good luck
let us know how you get on

Thanks for the advice Garry. Just been and checked the main ignition fuse (and any others that might be vaguely related!!!) and all are fine. I tried swapping fuses in case there was a problem that I could not see but still the same.

It looks like it's going to the garage tomorrow

Just heard back from the garage. The 'brand new' battery that I installed was knackered. Possibly sat on a shelf for ages?

The garage installed a new battery and all is OK now.
