how hard is it to fit a 3.2 evo lump into a 328 coupe e36 shell?

It's possible, but you'll need to change all running gear to M3 stuff as well cause the box, prop, half shafts and rear hubs are different. Have you got hold of a crash damaged M3 or just the engine?

I don't want to sound unenthusiastic, but would it not be a lot less bother, and probably not much more expensive to just sell the 328i shell and buy an M3 Evo.

Then at least you have a car that is what it's supposed to be, rather than a mish mash of parts that's neither one thing or the other.

sounds very silly but the car has a very great sentimental value to me its not something im looking to do straight away maybe 18months time

Is yours a saloon, coupe, touring or convertable? Have you done many other modifications to it that make you wish to keep it?
