Hey! Ive been convinced to get some bike carbs for my car, its a 1999 Audi A3 1.8 20v (non turbo), but have a few questions.

I was going to buy a set of Yamaha R1 carbs, was gonna get bogg bro's to make me a manifold, but found you can also get R1 throttle bodies aswell with injectors which i thought would be less hassle to set up, a bit more effecient and reliable. I was wondering if these would work with the standard engine management if it was remapped or would i need a stand alone management system?

Also, would i be able to use standard injectors and fuel rail or would i need to use the injectors in the bike throttle bodies?

Im new to this whole carb/throttle body thing, any help would be great!

And how are you going to get it to pass emissions without EFI?

Does the original system, use a MAP sensor? If so, you may have problems as getting a good and stable MAP signal from individual throttle bodies is not easy. Most people use an aftermarket ECU, especialy Megasquirt as it's the budget solution to go with the budget throttle bodies.

That would depend on the manifold design, you can keep the original injectors if there is some facility to mount them, or depending on anticipated power outputs you could use the bike ones.

Thank carefully about this if it's going to be a daily driver rather than a weekend/track toy. Plan your budget, if you have to buy a standalone ECU and pay for all the dyno time to get it mapped this may not offer very good value in terms of power increase. Insurance companies almost certainly won't like it either.

Thanks for the help!

I was told if carbs were set up properly, it should go through emissions.

Yes, i believe the ECU does use a MAP sensor on this engine, im quite certain.

I have spent the past few days really looking into it. I think the money is better spent on a 1.8T conversion (which was the original plan before i was sidetracked!), and for the same price as an engine management system and throttle bodies setup, i can have a larger turbo and other bits with it too. Its also something i can do myself without much trouble, no custom intake manifolds, or setting up carbs or programming ECU's! Which i dont need as its a daily used car. But it was certainly a possible alternative. But thanks for the help and input, its quite hard to find info about this stuff.
