Broad Street and Brindley Place (the latter is situated off the former) are probably your best bets.

Some nice bars near the Cathedral by Colmore Row as well that tend to be frequented by the business types in the city.

Old Joint Stock is an impressive pub (converted bank) and its Jazz night on Weds too

Hotel Du Vin/Malmaison would be my bet for a weekday night.

There are very few, non-student, late night venues open on a Wednesday I'm afraid.

If you are looking for somewhere late on though, try having a walk up Broad Street. Somewhere will be open.

There's a little club called the Yardbird right by Paradise Place (NE end of Broad street). Nice place to go for a few drinks - a good atmosphere, and usually some good live music on Thursday/Friday/Saturdays.

If you're after a nice pub with some good beers, there's an excellent place on Bennetts Hill called the Wellington, which has 15 real ales on tap, all on the go at once. Make sure you go to that Wellington though, and not the one further out of town.

If you're fussy about what you drink ( real ales etc.. ) then you need to go to the Wellington on Bennetts Hill, the Old Joint Stock is a pleasant place to be as well. If you want to check out some totty thne LLoyds Bar on Broad St is where to head to.

so Im told.....

The Mailbox/Brindley place is nice for a more civilised drinking session, and nice resteraunts. If you want filth go to broad street. (2 minute walk from the mailbox).

And another vote here biggrin

You're not that close from the NEC tho (8 miles ish) I'm guessing you will be getting the train into Brum?

As it is Metallica you are going to see (I'm guessing hehe) Then I'd recommend

Scruffy Murphys is located in Dale End in the City Centre, just down the road from the Academy. But they close at 11pm

It has been a while since I last went to a rock club in Brum - it used to be the Costermongers (pub Oasis), Eddie's No8 (club but burnt down, not sure if rebuilt yet - no info on Google), the Gallows (pub under Eddie's) or XLs (club @ 5 Ways - in the shopping centre at the end of Broad Street).

have a good time smile

Another vote for the welly. Always drop in there for a few ales before heading on (usally to the jam house). Mailbox is nice and if the weathers good you can go out the back and sit on the cut for a drink!

Hi, just my ha'pth worth...

http://www.scruffymurphys.co.uk/ - I second this

http://www.subsidebar.com/ - bit of a toilet, but it's ok (not as bad as Costers - which whilst it has loyal patrons, I've found it too rank for words - I'm pretty sure that it's reopened now).

http://www.eddiesrocks.com/about.php - Never went went it was No. 8 and haven't been since it reopened either, but might be of interest

Quite like:

http://www.bar-island.co.uk/ - not too far from the train station

REALLY REALLY close to the train station (same road, about 7 shop fronts away) is the Sunflower Lounge, can't find a website though so this will have to do: http://www.myvillage.com/birmingham/places/1708-th...
