Mercedes A Class A140 Avantgarde 2000

Just purchased a second hand one of these for the wife with semi auto gear box. Last July 08 previous owner paid out over £1000 for a replacement electro-hydraulic Clucth unit ( part 1304.4 ? ). Whe I drive it I hear a whining noise all through gears..is this normal for age of this car? or is there something else that needs looking at?. Nver driven semi auto before so unsure if noise is just that. Any help appreciated.

had a 170cdi semi auto for years never had that noise from it,in fact is was so good we just got a new a class !
