Probably in most cases because it's bloody good fun. Also because in these enviroments (the Harrier is an Afghanistan clip) there's a pretty good chance of someone with with a shoulder launched SAM crouching in the bushes close to thew departure path; an aircraft climbing out steadlily at perhaps 350 kts is a pretty simple target, one steaming along the deck accelerating through to 500kts is much harder to take out.

Surely the classic remains the near-demise of Alain de Cadenet?

Absolutely, but would they not be on a flight plan and therefore have to report why they were flying on the deck? Or are, once you are handed the keys to an F16 are you allowed to take it out for a hoon when you like? biggrin

It also gives the bad guys on the ground a close look at what you'll be dropping on them on the next pass if they don't fk off.

That's why the RAF fly through the Lake District, it's not why jets pass over troops as low as possible. It's just because it's a laugh and probably boosts morale.

That must be the ultimate high, or low.. or whatever. Do we have any ex forces pilots on here that have flown like that??. I would love to hear a first hand account of whats that like.

Also whats the likelyhood of a downdraft slamming you into the deck?

The RAF practice low flying in the Lake district but the USN's Blue Angels use San Francisco Bay.
