So many of us here in the US had this problem GM finally issued a Technical Bulletin for a free fix....

Speedometer Erratic Movement, Fuel Gauge Does Not Go to Full After Filling, Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Reads Hot and Coolant Temperature Light Illuminates (Reprogram IPC) #05-08-49-003 - (Jan 20, 2005)

2004 Pontiac GTO

Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 4L296011

Condition
Some customers may comment on one or more of the following conditions:

• Speedometer jumps erratically. Gauge may go up to 200 MPH or not return to zero.

• Fuel gauge does not move off empty when tank is full.

• Engine coolant temperature gauge reads hot and coolant temperature light illuminates.

These conditions may be intermittent.

Correction
Technicians are to reprogram the IPC with an updated software calibration. This new service calibration was released with TIS satellite data update version 1.0 available January 10, 2005. As always, make sure your Tech 2® is updated with the latest software version.

Important: Vehicles built after the VIN breakpoint must have the IPC replaced to correct these conditions

GM replaced my entire instrument cluster firstly prior to this TB being issued....and my guages would go crazy still. Since the software reflash it has never happened again.

had the same thing on mine and got the whole speedo binnacle replaced on warranty, i guess yours has ran out. im sure though i read somewhere that its a dry joint on one of the circuit boards so is repairable but dont quote me on that as i never looked into it properly. been fine ever since the new one

Ok guys here is my two penny worth !!

Mine allways does it when its Damp, and not been used for a few days, Stopping and turning the ignition off and back on allways works for me !!

I might add that this is pretty much the limit of my technical knowledge on the Monaro !!

has happened to me a couple of times, no biggie - just switch off and restart. Best one was leaving a classic car show and I had it doing 200mph in a stationary queue - so took a couple of pics for bragging rights lol. Only dealer up here I let anywhere near my car is my local one and they arent Monaro approved. I take the bits, the manuals, etc all in and I know the only mechanic that gets near my keys. They have the Monaro software on their Tech 2 as they had to check something on mine so in theory if it was a software flash they could probably do it. I'd dig out copies of the GM paperwork from the web for the software update and take that in with me so they know exactly what they're looking for. If it really was that annoying I couldnt live with it and the software fix was no use I'd order a replacement from either Oz or US - will be a lot less than the UK dealer price I suspect....

I had this happen a while back.Reflash at vauxhall cured it-not reoccured in the last year & a half or so. Was under warranty though, so don't know what it'll cost. I believe that the binnacle swap was the exception rather than the rule to fix the problem.

mine did this too not long after i got it about 4 or 5 times in a few weeks. Picadors replaced the instruments under warranty. im sure i have read somewhere that its a dry solder joint.

Yes, i saw that but im talking about another possible cause and a fix that someone had carried out by re soldering a joint in the cluster and then posted a "how to" on another forum

Yes I remember those post. They were removed because that didn't fix anything. The fix is the software re-flash.
