What are the differences in spec between a 4.2 and a 4.5 and also an early/late model cerbera?
I don't mean power wise or cc wise, I mean the important stuff.
I know later cars had bigger windscreens and different seats but that's all I know.
What other differences are there?
Also engine spec wise what are the differences?

Basically I want a cerbera and can afford an older car now but am wondering if it's worth saving a bit more till I can afford a later car?
If the are the same car just with different number plates then there's no need to wait, but I'm thinkng I'm only going to buy 1 so probably worth holding out till I can get the best 1 I can?

Also are the 4.2s the same engine as a 4.5 but shorter stroke?smaller bore? What would need to be done to a 4.2 to take it to 4.5 spec and beyond? I'm thinking in the future for when I will work on it cos I need more power, would a 4.5 be a better base?

Also are there any sites/ companies that do damaged engine or bodywork wise?
Cheers all

Bit of a contradiction on the power not interested but actually interested front, lol!

Plenty of info will be coming your way shortly but I will wager most will say buy based on condition, in other words buy the best you can, not necesarily the youngest or even 4.5 over 4.2 (you seem to want 4.5 although remember there'll often be no advantage whatsoever (sometimes even a slight disadvantage) until a 4.5's been mapped properly as the generic map from what I've read in threads by many well in the know is a bit, erm, pants).

Might as well come clean with your budget now as this will tailor advice appropriately. With the market as it is you should be able to get a car for £10K which will look stunning and have no need of major expenditure for a couple of years, e.g. no expendables nearing the end of life such as recent clutch, tyres, shocks, exhaust and have pleny of miles to next big service. I like to see a good history but that's my thing!

If it's too cheap there's usually a reason - check for those expendables, they will soon dent the budget!

I do want a 4.5 but only cos biggest is always best LOL
What I meant was if a 4.2 can b made as good or better than a 4.5 by fitting different rods/crank then I don't mind but if the block needs boring then it's going to cost more in the long run so I might as well get a 4.5 from the begining.
I don't mind the car needing work to release the extra potential as I can't leave a car alone anyway so will b doing work wether it's needed or not if I just want to, I can't help it LOL.

Budget wise either
a cheap car that needs work cos I can improve it,
A 12k ish car that's resonable
Or save to 15-20 for a really nice 1

Ideally I'd like a later car cos I prefer the seats and lights, and obviously when the car gets older it won't b as old, and the should have sorted all the faults and made improvements over the older cars.

I know every1 says buy on condition and history but I don't wanna rush into an older car cos I can now if the newer cars are better?

I currently have a car to sell that's going up at 10k. And another fairly soon at 8ish but didn't wanna spend it all on a car if I don't need to.

This is what I know of (but there are probably more)...

From 2000 'Mark 2' Cerberas had:
Tuscan Seats in front and new style seats in back
New windscreen
Different roof line and coloured A pillar
New main instruments with digital milage indicator and Speedo up to 220 mph
New style rear lights (some older cars have them retro fitted)

From late 2001/early 2002:
Back lit rear back lit number plate replaced with top lit one. Also very late cars seem to have a slightly different front bodywork.

Also later cars could come with factory fitted Speed Six style headlights, 18" spiders and bigger (drilled) discs, but many older cars have had these fitted during their life.

But, as said above, buy on condition.

Engine wise the 4.2 is subtly different to the 4.5 with different fuel rails, induction etc. It's generally accepted that the 4.2 is reasonably sorted from the factory at around 350bhp, where the 4.5 can be improved to around 400bhp+.

When looking at cars, don't also forget to look at upgrades that may already have been fitted. Some early cars have had the later headlights fitted, suspension upgrades, different wheels etc.

Buy on condition, never mind age. My car only had 23K miles on it when I bought it and it was 10 years old.

Cheers guys,
It does sound like a later 4.5 is what I'm after. Knew it would b it's the dearest LOL
I will buy on condition, but will b looking for a good later 4.5 instead of a good early 4.2

I will b upgrading/tuning the car so don't mind the 4.5s needing a little tlc to bring out the best in them.

Just to complicate matters...apparently the later 4.2's had the same crank as the 4.5's...essentially making them...wait for it...4.5 spec...at least the engine bottom end. The rest about induction etc is the same.

Don't know what you are used to driving and hence how much you would appreciate the difference between a 4.2 and 4.5...or even a well sorted 4.0 speed six...but I would but on condition everytime. Beyond that is down to the usual colour, spec, history...?

Good luck finding the car you want...you wont be dissapointed!

I'm sure I probably wouldn't notice the difference between a 4.2 and 4.5 when 1st buying one
But it's later on when I start modding it that I want the best base engine, wether that b a 4.2 or 4.5
And I really want the v8, don't want a straight 6.

Plus after owning the car for a little and getting used to the power if a 4.5 can b improved with just an induction mod, decat and remap then that's essentially a cheap gain compared to if internal work on a 4.2.

I may be wrong (its been known before) but in basic spec terms (certainly older cars) the 4.5 had as standard over the 4.2, the Hydratrak diff, aircon and full leather...

Oh, and the ability to say down the pub that "you own the daddy" (ignore the BOSS Cerb and other specials, Joe Public down the pub wont know about them wink)

I dont think that the 4.5s had full leather as standard (certainly not by 99).
I thought air con was always an extra?
The 4.5s came with bigger brakes, 17 inch RL7s (4.2s had the 16 inch saturns) and Hydracrap.
I wouldnt worry too much about different years specs unless you are a stickler for originality. Just buy the car with the best chassis and engine you can find.

sounds good peeps,
I think I might buy a 1/2 decent 1 now to get me in 1, then think about changing later on. Let's hope some1 wants to do a part ex with an m3gt or m3 Evo convertible.

is it right that the 4.5s have 6 pot front brakes and the 4.2s have 4 pots?

Nope. 4.5's have 4-pots too, just slightly bigger and held together with 6 bolts rather than 4.
