Vauxhall Astra rough ride

Sorry but this is from my brother who is not a PH of any kind, he just drives.
He tells me that the other day, his smooth riding 5 year old, 50K mile Astra suddenly felt like it was being driven across an off road car park.
It now judders and shudders when he drives it, so he has had his local garage look at it (who sound like cowboys) and they are puzzled.
The shocks are fine and he always checks his tyre pressures.
Any ideas folks.
