REPLACING FRONT DISCS & PADS ON A X5
Discussion
I am reasonably competent working on cars (I have plenty tool type things like trolley jacks, axle stands, torque wrench etc), but as I've never done this before, best ask before starting!
Can some kind soul give me an step by step A-Z on how to do this please, including such as torque this to this lbs/ft etc?
Obviously, if anyone thinks I'd best let the dealer / an indie do it (for example because you need this special tool etc), feel free to say so. Just inclined to be a bit of a miser for once (probably something to do with having just laid out £800-ish for new Michelins Diamaris all round) and save myself a bit of money and DIY it using OE Quality Parts.
BTW, being a bit of a light braker when it comes to driving on road, considering it occassionally pulls a race car trailer, 'Big Bertha' has done remarkably well all round, including the brakes; has now done near 40K from new, all with me and (having been serviced and MOT'd by my main dealer yesterday) it's front pads and discs are now nearing the end of their life; pads have about say 2000 miles left in them and even the discs are still not down to the minimum recommended thickness; not far off though, so it seems a bit pointless just putting in new pads onto discs which are now edge 'lipped' and nearing the end of their life. The rear discs and pads are apparently AOK and are fine for many thousand of miles. Pretty darn good I thought.
Thanks in anticipation.

Well last time I did it, I made an appointment, took the car down and stood next to the car while he did it and watched every single thing he did.Hardly hassle, as if you changed them yourself, you would spend probbably longer doing them.
It cost £35 for a pair.
Pads are usually £20. The guy who worked on my car claimed to have worked as a mechanic for over 20 years, so he wasn't exactly an apprentice.
Hi Guys.
Annoys me when someone picks other people's brains then they don't report what they decided. Just realised that I'd done the same ......... sorry ! >
After a bit of price comparing with such as buying the discs from a factor and getting them fitted by an indie to such as supply and fit from the likes of Kwikfit, Nationwide etc, finally decided to get the BMW Dealer to do it: The original discs and pads did 40,000 miles (so can't say fairer than that), they are negotiable on price (nowadays) and also, coupled with me having to be a bit weather dependent, it being a thoroughly mucky job, I couldn't really arrange the time to do it myself.
Paid £321.36 including VAT for front discs, pads & sensor ... and they gave it an overall vehicle condition inspection, a wash and a vacuum and dropped me off at work; only about three miles away, but nontheless helpful as I hadn't arranged it prior.
Pretty reasonable I thought.
That was about three weeks ago and the brakes feel great and there have been no problems.
Many thanks for all your input on this guys.
