Here is a question someone posed to me which I thought was interesting.
There are many varieties of most fruits (apples, pears, plums, grapes etc.) but this does not seem true for bananas. I know that plantains are a type of banana but why don't we have loads of varieties of bananas on the shelves of the supermarket? Or are there many varieties but I just don't know about them?
Thoughts would be appreciated.

I believe that all the bananas you find in the supermarket are essentially clones of each other. They do not reproduce like normal plants and have only lasted because of human cultivation. From what I remember, I think their genetic structure is getting weaker and weaker with every 'clone' and they are becoming very susceptible to disease and are slowly dieing out. In a few decades, there will be no more bananas!

All of the above could be wrong mind...

It is known in most holy circles (like crop circles only made out of nuns) that God created the banana (millions of years ago using Photoshop) for Eve as an alternative to Adam... the little bananas were made after eve let herself go abit.

There may be more than 300 varieties but READ THE LINK - it does say most of the ones we buy are of the same type and that they are cloned.
It's also awfully 'ecologically sound' for a PH link!!
I worked with a chap who's father was a banana breder, quite a famous one apparently liven in Jamaica - but can I remember his name...
