Afternoon all

I'm contemplating my first foray into LR ownership. As per the title, it really comes down to what model, what age, what spec and the relative merits of all. I'm at quite an early stage in looking into it, so apologies if this comes across a bit vague.

I'll be doing about 15k a year, made up mainly of a mix between long distance motorway trips and city trundling. I don't really need off-road capability, but it would be useful for visiting sites and possible occasional muddy lane exploits. So why a LR? Well coz they're clearly cool, comfortable, excellent cruisers, and I've wanted something with a LR badge on the front since I was 3, and 28 years on feel like it's time to scratch the itch.

So...

I would want to buy main dealer for warranty and peace of mind.

Budget: approx £28k, which seems to buy either a 08 plate SE Disco, a 57 plate HSE Disco or a 06/56 plate TDV6 RRS. Looks like I'm probably about £6k short of a TDV8.

Fuel: almost certainly diesel, with a trip to JE Engineering for a remap.

So what do you think? any age related problems to look out for? Any big service items due at particular mileages?

And given that the RRS is built on Disco platform, is there much difference in terms of handling / reliability / running costs?

I'm edging towards an HSE Disco (because it's newer and has the toys). I prefer the styling of the RRS but perhaps a little concerned about the image...

Thank you - those sites are excellent. Having read some of the Disco3 posts, I'm now worrying about reliability...

If you're going to do it I think you should do it properly.
If your money won't go far at a franchised dealer go to a specialist like Saxton 4x4 and buy a proper RR.

Buy from a main dealer if at all possible and get a warranty.

Do you have kids?

If you have more than two, I'd go Disco 3 as you've more seating options, with the back row of seats. The Disco also has better air cond throughout with more vents at the back.

How much gear do you carry and what's the parking like when you want to leave it?

I've had Disco TD5s and more recently the RRS.

I prefer the drive of the RRS but, on balance, I should have bought the uglier Disco 3, as I've got three kids and they often drive me to distraction fighting in the back etc.

I think if you read any forum their will be a flood of posts about issues with cars rather than praising them, that shouldn't put you off.

I have an RRS and love it but it just depends what you're after. If you need the 7 seats then obviously the D3 would be the choice. The RRS is a better more involved drive on the road, and the RRS is over 200kg's lighter so even the TDV6 is noticably quicker.

The D3 has much more space and rear headroom, and is just at good at cruising, so it's just really a matter of taste.

I love them both, either are great cars!

If you have the cash though there are new engines and interiors coming out this summer in the RRS (not sure about the D3?). The interior is much more like the full fat RR and it's had a slight external face lift.

There will be the 500hbp 5 ltr supercharged engine from the XF and a 3 ltr TDI which will apparently be 224 on emmisions and faster than the TDV8!!! Don't know if this is all true but might be worth waiting for?

Thanks for all the feedback.

I don't need 7 seats, so either remains an option. And thanks for the "proper" RR suggestions... another temptation to consider.

I need to go and testdrive a few and see how they feel. I'm still a little nervous about the reliability issues, but I hear what you say about forums tending to over-emphasise the bad stuff.

Decisions, decisions... I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks

Re the Disco, the 55 plates were the worst for reliability IIRC. We had one that gave us problem after problem. However,we now have a 58 plate and have had no problems so far... From using the Disco3 forum - which is fantastic by the way - I think I am right in saying that the later model's reliability has improved vastly.
Personally I'd go for a Disco3 or a FF rather than a Sport. Just my opinion though...driving

I have owned a Disco 3 for the last 2.5 years with no problems. 3 friends also run Disco 3's and other than servicing, they have not experienced any problems either.

If you visit any specialist forum, you will see many issue related posts. For example, if you went onto RS246 forum, there are lots of posts about RS6 and RS4 suspension issues, clutch failures etc. The M3 forum used to be full of complaints about failed engines, same with Porsche. Like the previous poster mentioned, keep clear of 05' models and you should be OK.

Disco is great if you need the space. Its a very comfortable and quiet cruiser and good for moving Kids and people around. Also has lots of pockets to store crap that the wife and kids insist on bringing with them.

RRS offers more luxury, sportier drive but driven by WAGs

A few things...
No need to bother with a main dealer, the car will be under LR warranty anyway, and you'll probably get more for your money elsewhere( especially private, or if not indi). When we bought ours in March last year at 7 months old we saved about 4K that way.
Ours has done 33000 miles now (08 model year Disco HSE) with no issues at all, other than our local LR dealer being con artists of the highest order.
Ours is a go anywhere 4x4,school bus, grandparent carrier, removal van and most importantly for me perfect relaxing waftmobile after a week with the excitement of my Noble. It's the only car the wife has ever fallen in love with and I'm totally converted after being dead against originally.
Don't worry about what you may read on Disco3,it's a very informative site warts and all,and buying one as new as you intend to will mean all the early issues have been ironed out.
Go for it.

RRS is a great piece of kit, looks sexier than the D3, but it is really only a 2 adult tourer, with maybe the odd rear seat passenger. You will never be disappointed buying the D3, it will carry everything and more in great comfort.

Avoid first edition LR's of any sort, so that'll be '54/'55 plate cars on the D3. I have a '08.5MY and it has been faultless, using Shell V-Power diesel at the mo, and while it is no sports car, I don't find it sluggish once above 2000rpm.

Buy wisely, if used go for the HSE (although standard options do change from model year to model year). I f new wait until the summer for the new 3.0ltr Twin turbo D3. It will be about £48k new however!

Our Disco is fantastic. As Albert Bridge said, our first one was a nightmare for reliability. But it was so practical that it was the only option when we came to buy a new car. The RRS was never an option, it was either the Disco for load lugging/space, or a FullFat for the luxury.

Disco won...I am very happy with it.

Thanks guys - I'm really grateful for all the helpful comment, and pleased to see a lot of you restoring my faith in LR!

I ran out of time this weekend, but have lined up testdrives of both for next weekend.

I don't need the extra space of the Disco and prefer the looks of the RRS. But the fact that the price of a 06 RRS buys you a 08 Disco 3 of pretty identical spec is weighing heavily on the mind. I'll just have to test drive both and see which wins.

Incidentally, I looked at a RRS yesterday - 06 with approx 20k miles on the clock, and the driver's seat was really showing signs of wear - much worse than I would expect at that age and mileage. Is this a common complaint (otherwise, I'm guessing the last owner a fat git with a liking for tweed and regular short journeys??)...

No offence to RRS owners and I'm sure you won't take any coming from a Skoda driver but ...

Most certainly does - we dallied with the idea of swapping our FFRR for a Disco this year, but not even fashion-concious wifey would entertain an RRS. Luxury, wafty, V8y, and go anywherey. Can't be beaten.

That and the fact you won't fit in it due to your rotund nature.

Mind you, it does amaze me how they've made it so small inside.
