I was walking to work this morning and saw quite a smart looking, mini-SUV type of vehicle. It was definitely a Merc and I would say it was pretty much exactly the same size as an X3 - does anyone know anything about this vehicle? I've never seen one before and assume it has been released by Mercedes as direct competition for the X3 (which i didn't realise had gained that much traction - i certainly have seen many of them around).

Cheers,

Ben

Hi Ben,

Do you mean this one?

The car you refer to is the new GLK. It is (IMHO) far prettier than the X3 and, in the correct spec, significantly more capable!

I took a look at one last December at a show in Florida and posted on here at the time ...

GLK seems to have been around for ages before it was actually released - MB got it featured on Sex in the City about 2 years ago.

However they've said they definitely won't be doing it in RHD - it's based on C Class and the transfer shaft for the front drive comes out of the gearbox on the right hand side. Same reason we don't get AWD Merc saloons in the UK.

Steve - that's the one!! Looks great in the flesh. First one I had seen.

Presumably, no RHD means not many will be seen in the UK. Shame.

Cheers

I have to agree - I think it looks great, and far better than any of the competition.

Although the "no-RHD" is officially blocking the UK version, I did hear talk a few months back that this decision may yet be reversed ...

We are supposed to be getting it when they facelift the car; so probably 2011/12. Shame they didn't develop it for the RHD market when they were designing it, I think it would be a great seller over here.
