I currently have two Tag Heuers - the first is a 2000 series I bought just after university and the second a 5 year old Carrera limited edition (celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Carrera watch).

I could just go down the safe Tag route again, but I really want to try something new - I've been browsing this forum and really like one of the the Panerai Luminor watches, but now I have this worry about buying new vs second hand.

From looking at the various websites, it seems that there is a small saving to be made buying second hand, but not that much if it's a hardly worn model (is this true?) and if I go for an older watch then I have to worry about whether it's genuine or not.

I guess I'm thinking of around the £2-3k level, so any other suggestions / ideas at this price level would be appreciated.

Any help much appreciated.

I'm no expert but I tried one of these on in LHR last week and it was a lovely, well made watch. There should be something in their range to suit your tastes.

Not sure how much Panerai's retail at? I thought the base ones were around the £3k mark?

If it's a Panerai style you're after you could do a lot worse than Anonimo. Lots of nice designs & superb quality cases.
They are less expensive than Paneria, but you would suffer a bit more depreciation if you decide to sell it on.

Agree with the above, but before you take the plunge and sink a significant amount of cash into one, perhaps as a lot of people do try a Marina Militare to make sure you like the styling first.

Thanks for the replies - I do like the look of the Militare watches. Have to admit I'd never heard of them before. I do like the IWC watches but almost feel over familiar with them now. I will continue doing my research...

They're nice designs, those Panerais. The only snag is, if you have skinny wrists you will look like you're wearing a clock.

That's a good point. I was planning on just ordering online without trying it on. I have got skinny wrists, but massive hands, so not sure how that would work... scratchchin

Depends, then, on whether you have your watches loose so it falls onto your hand or tight so it sits on your wrist. It would look daft on your wrist if it's skinny. Roll a ruler round your wrist. If it measures around 6.5" (ie the circumference of my wrist) then you will have a problem. You might be better off going into a shop and trying one on.

Sorry to bump this topic, but I'm shortly heading off to New York and wondered if this was a good place to buy a new watch. I know the dollar isn't the bargain it used to be, but any thoughts on whether it's worth a look?

+1

With 2 Tags, you need something a little more interesting and unique. I wouldn't recommend Panerai for this reason.

Yes, I agree. I need to move away from the comfort zone a bit.

Anyone any thoughts about the New York question?

All I can think of is - don't buy anything on the spot.

If you're not going with a specific watch in mind, don't assume just because it is in Dollars it will work out cheaper.

Get on the internet and see what they are going for in this country to make sure you will make a proper saving buying it from there.

Other than that, I guess it's just the same as buying a watch in this country? Still get a warranty if bought from an AD?
