Used Westys....spec decisions
Discussion
Probably a can of worms thread, I know, but hey, stick with it.
Assume you are looking for a nice Westy for fast road/some track, what spec would you be looking for ?
In particular, engines.
Vaux Red top ? I ran a 97 Vectrs SRI for a bit, and loved the motor
Zetec ? dont know much about it
Pinto ? isnt this the heaviest of the bunch ?
Cross flow ? getting old surely ?
Finally,carbs or injection ?
And to cap it all off, budget around £8k.

I'd be looking for a redtop or a Zetec at that price, not sure what the pros and cons of each are, though it's worth bearing in mind that Zetecs are a lot easier to get hold of these days.

At 8k I'd be looking at an XE/Zetec/4AGE. Pinto's and X-Flows are getting a bit long in the tooth now. Even the XE is getting harder to get hold of. But the above all offer great bang per buck out of a good, strong, modern lump.
After coming from carbs, the sheer lack of hassle and economy of throttle boddies are worth the extra on their own.
All IMO.

Ditto.- Theres nothing wrong with a x-flow/pinto/cvh/k-series (i have a cvh in my westfeild) however ultimatly for £8k i would expect something newer. Theres even a spattering of duratecs emerging on the secodn hand market.
Simularly, while theres nothing wrong with carbs at all, i would proberbly be looking for something fuel injected with mappable ecu for that sort of money.
- Or at minimum, mapable ecu controled ignition.
- Even im looking at the megasjolt/edis route.

For 8k, I'd be looking at 2.0l Duratecs (assuming they'd fit?) with TBs (GSXR1000s would fit as I think there's a manifold for that setup I've seen on eBay)... MegaSquirt works with them, doesn't it?
Could bolt on a turbo later too and fly off into the scenery on every apex
Hada quick Google...
http://www.raceco.com/ - Sell: base Duratec for 1.2k, or a sweet looking 220bhp 2.0l duratec for 5k (+VAT) [zero affiliation, so no idea who they are, just did a quick look around for people selling them!]
