Hi folks,

I have recently been back out cycling to get fit on my 12 year old Carrera Gryphon mountain bike.

It is old and heavy and I feel the need to change to something more modern and better suited to the mostly road riding that I do, but able to do light off road when required.

I don't want to spend more than £300 and I have found the following 3 options:

Ridgeback Tempest http://www.evanscycles.com/products/ridgeback/temp...

Scott Sportster P6 http://www.evanscycles.com/products/scott/sportste...

Scott Sub 30 http://www.evanscycles.com/products/scott/sub-30-2...

I haven't found much on the web for Ridgeback but the spec seems ok (to a noob like me) - will discs make much of a difference to my daily experience?

Is the year old Scott Sub model worth going for? Which is better 700c rims or 26 in? What difference does it make?

So many questions....

any info is greatly appreciated - even alternatives for the budget if you have them

I did see the Carrera Subway 2 in Halfords but not sure if I should go back again - heard a few bad things about Carreras breaking after a relatively short time span?

Cheers,
Steven

to be fair it depends what "light off road" means, if it means tow paths and that kind of thing you will be fine, anything more than that might be a struggle with those tyres.

personally i would go for the scott sub 30, it looks nice and has textro v-brakes, i absolutely detest cheap disc brakes that do not work and are made of low quality components. Also the geometry on the rigdeback looks wierd, too "off roady" to be comfortable on the road as that top tube slopes a lot more than the scott.

700c basically is a 29" wheel give or take and has less rolling resistance in comaprison to a 26"

At that price forget discs, they'll be a waste of money. The three you chose look good, but look here also:
