Hi,

Can any one recommend somewhere to have a steering rack refurbished in Sussex? And also any hints tips on removing the old one would be useful.

I have been aware the last few time I have driven the car of fluid under the passenger side of the car, but as I jacked it up to have a look it started pouring out the driver side gaiter so I assume the seals inside the rack are shot.

Thanks

Barry

hello barry. i had my rack reconditioned for exactly the same reason as you recently. its not too hard to remove a bit fiddly the oil pump has to be removed to allow the rack to "slip" out. oil res and water res have to come out too. once removed i took it to a place in gillingham cost me £130 to have it recon pleased with the job too. but remember to tell him not to paint it otherwise it comes back painted matt black. 01634-576654

On a similar vain: I'm told the rack on a MK2 is more sedate than a MK1's making for easy road driving. Is it possible to put a MK2 rack on a MK1 if this is the case?

Yes, yes it is with the shorter track-rod ends.
