S2 purchase, hood and door hinge
Discussion
Hi All. Having owned a wedge and Chim in the past I am now considering an S2. I have just been to see one which was quite reasonable but I have a few questions I would like the collectives view on.
The passenger door hinge appears to have seized and broken the top mount out of the car bodywork (underneath the scuttle panel I think it is called) has anyone else experienced this problem? It looks like it may be a bit of a fiddle to repair. Does anyone know if you can gain access to the top mount from inside the car.
The hood seemed to be a real fiddle to put back on could anyone advise the correct order of assembly i.e. panels hooked into the windscreen frame then back section raised or panels fitted to rear section then the whole lot raised together. I think this one may have been made more difficult by having one of the front location lugs missing. Should there be a catch to hold the two halves of the roof together?
The engine idle seemed to be rough and al over the place (rev counter not working) ut I would guess it was anywhere between 500 and 1500 rpm. The battery had been changed yesterday and I think I read somewhere that this upsets the ECU for a while. I let the engine warm up until the fan cut and it seemed to improve a little.
Many thanks in advance

Hi Terence
The door hinge is something I wouldnt tackle myself but I note you live Warwickshire Adrian Venn Exactly TVR in Coventry would be your man. There are threads you can aearch for on here
The hood is bit of a pain (only thing I dont like about the car). Correct sequence is to put the near side (I think that the one which has the lip which goes under where to two panels join in the cenre) targa panel in place with the hood folded back, add the second panel and make sure that they are squeesed together in the middle, then bring the whole lot forward so the lug at the front local in to slots at the top os the screen. Once ita all lined up snap the over centre struts into place and lastly fix the clip at the front of the panels to the screen. Ther arnt any clips holding the two panel tpgether in the cantre.
Engine roughness if yoou search you will find a number of threads. But the ECU does appear to loose its memeory with the battery disconnected. Quite often a full cycle of running the engine up to the fan cutting in and then cooling down a couple of times does seem to help
Good luck in your search

Thanks for the info Gerald-TVR. I was approaching the roof fitting the wrong way round by fitting the panels to the screen frame first.
I would probably tackle the door hinge myself was just wondering if anyone here had experienced the same problem. As you say it would appear that others have experienced rough runnng after battery removal.
Thanks again Terence

I can't get on with the recommended way of fitting the roof.
I raise the rear section with one roof strut engaged.
I then fit the roof sections into the top of the windscreen with the rear sat on top of the roof.
I then release the one roof strut just enough so the roof drops onto the hoop section, then tighten it again and usually it engages OK with the rear section.
Then pop up the other roof strut & the windscreen clips and Bob's your Dad's brother

Thanks barkychoc had not thought of that but makes sense and is probably a fairly quick way of doing it. My feelings were very evenly split between gettng another wedge or trying an S and yesterday the game I was having with the roof as it was trying to rain was putting me off the S.
Thanks again

Thanks again

When taking down the roof it's a reverse of the above remember though to release the offside strut 1st. I've released this one last whilst holding the offsode roof panel as the rear part disengaes from the panels the other side drops into the car as it's that one that has the lip. Not good when a passenger my sister was in the car at the time. Couldn't help laughing though this kinda didn't go down too well either for some reason.
Another top tip is to have the windows partly down or doors open as when the rear comes up it can snag on the glass well it does on mine. The other thing is to ensure that the roof panel tags that slot into the windscreen slots are properly engaged. I say this because one of mine has been damaged and if it's not insert correctly means the roof panel isn't fully flush with the windscreen meaning the rear becomes a pig to engage. Last thing I have the panels with the so called safety clips these can be bloddy frustarting as on a couple of occassions I've actually managed to put the roof completly up with the clip wedged between the panel and the windscreen surround. Not sure what they are good for anyhow they weren't on the S1 I had and don't appear to grip very tightly anyhow.

Johnnywgk I found my old wedge roof much easier than the S2 I went to see yesterday but then the wedge roof is a single panel. I also think there was more room in the wedge boot with the hood in it than there is in the S. in the process of removing and replacing the roof I managed to end up with it in the car and trapped against the windows as TVRmadpaul commented. I guess it is a case of practice makes perfect. Though in my defence I would add that the right hand panel was missing one of the front locating pegs completely and the other seemed rather short compared to the left hand panel. Thanks for your replies. Terence
Hi Terrence
like just about everything else with these cars there is at least two sets of thinking on the Targa Panel Raising/Lowering - this is a recent discussion and I'm still happy with "My Way"...
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
In any case you only do it once each way per year
Lower Roof in April and Raise Roof in October (or in Gentleman Geoffs book its "Lower Roof when Bought Car, Raise Roof to sell it" !!!
)
Go for it... !

This is exactly how I do it but I have an S1. I didn't like the way the previous owner taught me - put the panels into the windscreen sockets first then bring up the rear hood to meet them and snap shut. I thought it was clumsy and took longer. The manual says do it the Gerald-TVR-Stiglet way so I'm sticking to that! Don't think there is any difference between S1/2 except those clips at the front. I find it very easy, only takes 5 mins and I put the panels away in their bags. It's one of the few things I don't complain about! (Until it leaks of course). Good luck in your search x2
Thanks for the advice guys and for the link ketvrin, intereting reading. I think if I get an S i will have to do a little practice on roof remoal and replacement. Unfortunately mine will have to live outside so hood will need to go up at least once per day. I must admit my first attempt which involved lower rear section then retrieve panels from inside the car could do with refining especially if my partner is in the car. Although on thniking about it, it could be easier with someone in the car as they could support the panels whilst I raised the rear section. Anyway thanks all for advice am hoping to see a wedge later this week then it will be decision time, a car with a one piece panel or a two piece panel. Terence
